Dublin quartet Jetsetter make sparkling punk with rousing choruses and pulsing riffs – and their chat isn’t bad either.
You are on the label Any Other City – which other city would you love to live in?
We do love Dublin, so that’s a tough one. Jeff wants to go somewhere warmer. I’ve just blown warm air into my hands to limber them up for typing so I’d tend to agree. Hell, we just want to wear shorts, suck up tacos and soak up the cosmic rays of LA. Or Mexico City in 1973.
Has Dublin had much of an influence on your music?
Yeah!
How important is the dynamic of friendship to the group and the creative process?
I wouldn’t be writing songs without firm encouragement from certain friends. I wouldn’t be in this band if I hadn’t been friends with the guys first. We’re friends with so many Dublin bands. Being friends is pretty good. Just remember what your old pal said, boy you got a friend in me.
If you had to pick one song, one film and one book to entertain you for the rest of your life, which would they be?
Film: Satantango. It’s long and beautiful, funny and sad.
Song: Freddie King – Going Down. He’s fuckin’ in.
Book: 2666 Roberto Bolaño. That dude had a sick mind.
There’s a real blend of old and new to your sound – who are your influences?
Most of Jet Setter have worked in record stores over the years, so we obviously listened to a lot of old records. I’d like to think all the songs I’ve really loved, that have given me goosebumps no matter how many times I’ve heard them, have influenced me in some way. Shine On Me by The Soul Stirrers and Ben Webster’s Soulville spring to mind… But we’re an indie rock band so it makes much more sense to say Yo La Tengo, Pavement, Felt, The Clean, Parquet Courts, Real Estate etc
You’ve been compared to The Strokes, Pulp and Graham Coxon – are these conscious influences of yours?
They’re probably more subconscious by this stage due to my teenage listening habits.
What’s the best gig you have ever played?
Dublin Rock and Roll Half Marathon was absolutely hilarious.
What’s your favourite quote?
“Nutella, Nutella, Nutella, Nutella, Nutella, Nutella, Nutella, Nutella” Dara Kiely (Girl Band)
What’s your favourite flavour jelly bean?
Jelly beans are shit like. x
