It’s tough to know which category to file this post under. Are Earthling Brains musicians or artists (let’s not get into the discussion about them being one and the same thing). As well as a fantastic band whose debut album is released by Forward Defensive Records on the 10th June, Earthling Brains is also a comic strip drawn by Joe. If all this sounds confusing, I spoke to Joe to try to shed some light on things.
So…what is you do exactly?
I started drawing about two years ago, started the Earthling Brains comic strip about a year and a half ago, and I’ve been uploading strips on a weekly basis since April 2012. I liked drawing and comics when I was a kid but gradually just lost interest.
I guess I started drawing again for a couple of reasons. At the time I was having trouble with my hearing and started thinking I might not be able to play music for that much longer without causing some serious damage. So I needed a plan B in terms of a creative outlet. And then I started getting into comics again and thought I wouldn’t mind a crack at that. Plus, compared to most hobbies it’s pretty cheap to get yourself going!
At the start I had all these plans to write something important and the comic strip was just a way of making sure I drew a couple of times a week! I haven’t got round to the important comic yet….
Have you found the secret to the human mind then? Describe a typical earthling brain.
Pink and spongy! And prone to silliness.
What do you get out of it?
I suppose the main thing is a creative outlet, but I like the diary aspect. I mean, it’s a pretty patchy diary, but most of this stuff happens (though I do get complaints when I’ve misrepresented someone for a punch line). It’s also satisfying printing up comics and hearing from people who read them.

Are you more a musician or a illustrator and artist?
I think it’s been 50/50 this year. I’ve done some cool drawing-related things (a comic in Off Life magazine, contributed some of the booklet art for Darren Hayman’s new record, and finished my first non-Earthling Brains comic, but actually they’ve all been related to music in one way or another!
My new comic, The Long Night Is Over is a companion piece to the album I’ll Leave A Light On For You. The next couple of big projects I’m planning also involve combining music and comics because you can tell the same story but in completely different ways.
I’ve been making music for a while and I have a sort of confidence about doing it that I lack when making comics. But at the moment I’m interested in putting the two things together, so half and half is about right!

What sort of things do you comment on, and where do you get your ideas?
Disappointing summer blockbusters, hot water bottles, video games, whatever happened that day… Like I say, it’s based on stuff that actually happens, one way or another. Almost inevitably the silly stuff. I grew up on newspaper comic strips so that style suits me down to the ground (though my strips tend to have more swearing).

Do you find there is much of ‘scene’ around comics and zines?
I’m sure there is, but I tend to operate in a bubble… or have done up until more recently. I had a table at DIY Cultures 2013 at Richmix last month and that was the first time I’ve been in a room full of people on a similar wavelength, trying to flog comics and zines. That was cool but a bit daunting too.
If you’re in a scene, the tendency is to produce something that will satisfy that audience (which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but I think you run the risk of hitting a dead end, creatively. I think the most important thing is to try to be happy with whatever you’re working on, and worry about how it’s perceived at another time.
Earthling Brains – I’ll Leave A Light On For You is available on June 10th on Forward Defensive Records

Released June 14th 2013

Northern Lights & Southern Skies, the new album from The Capsules, sounds as though it was recorded in a smooth wind tunnel, floating chilled dance, good Saturday evening warm up in the sun or Sunday afternoon thinking back to the night before kind of music. Wistful and whimsical yet fully rooted in beats and electronica, occasionally flipping into what seems like a darker textural edge simmering underneath. The output of married couple Julie and Jason, who met at high school and started playing music together when everyone else was following the rules and doing homework, the sleepless nights and pensive reveries seem to have paid off on this album.

When I enter the Camden Barfly (the last remaining one of the chain) Klak Tik are sat around the table laughing and drinking, easy banter, buzzing post soundcheck.…

When I enter the Camden Barfly (the last remaining one of the chain) Klak Tik are sat around the table laughing and drinking, easy banter, buzzing post soundcheck. I start with the obvious question, ‘so…Slow Club?’

‘I had heard of them’ says Jon (Beyer), ‘and then when we were booked I looked them up…Harry Potter is in their video! (2012’s Beginners) We had to say yes.’ Playing at London’s Proud Gallery alongside Slow Club and Moats, as part of the Good Sex series, the band are in a cheery mood, having just completed a successful soundcheck.

Their unique and intricate music is one of the reasons that, where possible, they fly their own technician with them wherever they go – ‘like travel insurance, but way more important’ says lead everything Søren Bonke. After seeing the show it is clear why the band need a special touch to really allow their sonics to deliver. A fantastical and emotional escapade through physical and emotional landscapes, the music is both meandering and immediate, a flood of instruments and intricacies, the four piece (Søren Bonke, Jonathan Beyer, Matthew Mitchinson and Andy Joseph) have an air that is both organic and well honed.

What Klak Tik do with their combination of folk, alternative rock, orchestral grandeur and experimental melodies is summed up simply on their Facebook page as ‘we make music.’ Very much the vision of lead singer, lead guitarist, and general leader, the Danish multi-instrumentalist Søren, he cites it as his idea of the perfect musical output, ‘or certainly not far from it, and that’s the key achievement of my life.’ It’s a sentiment echoed by Jon, who feels as ‘in the moment and as joyful as I can be playing music’ when playing with Klak Tik.

Born out of Six Day Riot, the alt pop band who Søren and Jonathan were both members of, Soren has started the band and looped in the talent around him, and he still has an air of leadership. Matt quips that ‘it’s got to the point now where Søren lets Jon answer his own questions. We did have to sit down for a briefing session before this interview though.’

Over time of course the band has evolved to be an entity in itself, rather than a leader with followers, and on second album The Servants (out on Safety First) what is often a sparse genre is made rich, lush and intense. This verdant sound is one inspired by rain. Not a fan of rain myself, I inquire as to why such a fascination with precipitation. ‘It’s the hydration element’ explains Søren, ‘the rain basically brings green.’ Influenced by the sound of rain hitting the tent, when you feel safe and separate from it, its rhythmic rapping on the canvas soothing. It’s a sound used to great effect in the show, when I genuinely have to look up to check that the sprinklers have not turned on at points. Far from gimmicky though, the sound of rushing rain is like a fifth instrument, another layer to the multifarious sound from the stage.

Concerned that our conversation of leadership may have sparked rivalries, I comment that surely there never can be a leader of a band – everyone contributes in some way and it is impossible to quantify the value of those contributions. ‘I have a spreadsheet’ throws in Matt. The ensuuing debate about whether energy and hard work is worth the same as the snare beat that makes the song, and the law suits that have argued this is a lively one, and I am aware that the interview needs to wrap up. To wrap up, I mention that there are of course numerous studies that claim to have discovered the formula for a perfect pop song.

‘Yeah, I don’t have that book.’ says Søren.

Arguable.

Klak Tik’s album The Servants is out now on Safety First Records, and the launch party takes place on April 16th at London’s Sebright Arms. You should go.

Released October 29th on Duchamp Records Own Designed Love is the new single from London based The ID, released on October 29th. The video synthesised various off kilter images and…

Released October 29th on Duchamp Records

Own Designed Love is the new single from London based The ID, released on October 29th. The video synthesised various off kilter images and loops in a slightly surrealist style, an avant garde montage inspired by the work of Buneul, Dali and Cocteau, among others, all linked together by the Dadist movement that influences so much of the band’s ethos and output.
In Own Designed Love The different elements of the band are more layered, building upon one another but each its own entity, flickering and flirting together, rather than compressed in intensity as in Age Anti Age, the debut single from earlier in the year. A swelling onslaught of emotion, the song’s simmering menace is somewhat intoxicating in aura, and the perpetual build of dark melody into a hooky chorus marks the band out as master song smiths, and definite ones to watch. Conveniently, they’re playing the No.6 Basement on Oct 27th, Waiting Room on Nov.14th, and Camden’s Barfly the first day of December, so you can go and watch them!

Holland & Barrett, probably in an effort to reward my loyalty (their share of my spend makes other retailers envious) recently landed a Brain Box through my door. Well aware that it is harder for us to get up and running in the gloomy winter months than the vibrant summer days, this is a package of foods, drinks and supplements designed to boost brain power.
You’ll be pleased to know that you can be sure that this review is objective. When PR company Perishables and damageables delivered by post they run the risk that their new product will arrive not showcased in the best light, and such was the case of my Crips, an ‘oven baked wheat and potato snack.’ Therefore to trial said crisps, I had to go and purchase a pack myself, and I don’t loquaciously elaborate where my hard earned cash is earned. You want to know the price of journalistic integrity? 70p. More like crackers than regular crisps, these Crips are far more satisfying than the usual insubstantial light options offered. The price means they are not competitive to the normal bag of crisps to have in a lunchbox, but for a snack on the run, I’ll be back.
I like fruit. A lot. Five a day? Pah, give me a real challenge. As such I generally have little time for the novelty new products that claim to make it easier for us to consume those essential vitamins and minerals, and in this hand holding also take us back a few years, generally resembling the consistency of baby food. But Be Fruity Fruit Bars are good. With more of a bite than most pureed bars and a range of flavours means that they add something above the usual raisin options. ( I can’t eat raisins or sultanas and therefore seen to be excluded from apples, fruit, nuts, muesli, cereal products. Anyone know of any?) Not too sticky, not too sweet, and surprisingly substantial – they managed to survive a festival and flight to New York. At only 55p, they’re pretty purse friendly too.
Speaking of New York and festivals I am in the enviable position of exhaustion from too many holidays and too much partying, and as such the supply of Gingko Biloba (£5.39 for 60) that landed on my desk could not have come at a better time. At the moment I haven’t noticed a huge jump in my mental alertness, but give me sixty days and the Times crossword will be no match for my mental agility.
I can’t really review Walnuts, they are what they are, and can only reinforce countless pieces of information from doctors, nutritionists and health experts, in that they are an excellent source of protein, vitamin B and do boost energy. Plus they’re yummy. If you want to get them from Holland & Barrett, they’re £1.89 for 100g, which I guess is about standard.
To wash it all down is the new EQ8, a lightly fizzy drink that contains fruit sugars, ginseng. guarana and L-cartinine. Based on fruit juices, the Orange & Passion Fruit flavour was a good mid morning lift, and as a far more natural lift than Red Bull, I’m hoping the Cranberry & Apple tastes just as good with vodka. Although for £1.49, I could probably double up.
So now Autumn is officially here, and my brain needs a hand, I know where to shop for those wiiiiiings…
