Secret Shores is a glorious book. Ella Carey takes us on a journey through the eighties publishing world in New York, the Australian post war modernist movement, romantic…

Secret Shores is a glorious book. Ella Carey takes us on a journey through the eighties publishing world in New York, the Australian post war modernist movement, romantic Rome and the inner world of her characters through intelligent and enthralling prose.

Our protagonist, Tess Miller finds her editing career floundering when she’s given a new assignment working with an old and obscure poet Edward Russell. His story of Rebecca Swift, an artist of yesteryear, is compelling, but there’s something else that captures Tess. Could the searing and tragic romance of which he writes be true wonders Tess? In a bid to garner publicity she goes on a quest to explore the true story, and ends up both rekindling an old romance and finding a new one herself.

The past and present are carefully intertwined, and both described with acute detail. It’s elegantly written and the themes of art, authenticity, generational conflict and love are delicately explored, but at the same time a captivating plot keeps the compulsive pace. Poignant moments are frequent, but never overused or overwrought, and there’s plenty of dramatic twists to hook you in further.

Secret Shores is Carey’s third novel, The House by the Lake, From a Paris Balcony and Paris Time Capsule all being bestsellers. It’s out now on Lake Union Publishing.

Ball Park Music have made waves amongst their native Australian press and public with their frantic and twitchy indie pop, bubbling up in the unexpectedly thriving music scene…

Ball Park Music have made waves amongst their native Australian press and public with their frantic and twitchy indie pop, bubbling up in the unexpectedly thriving music scene that hides in the humid and somewhat monochrome city of Brisbane with their vibrant and scampering tunes. Their new album Puddinghead is the third in three years, and is filled with energetic riffs, hormanal angst, sensual oohs and disco beats – and is that a hint of the very British and very retro Suede? Well rounded is too often a synonym for bland, but in this case it is what it suggests – a pleasing blend of many experiences channelled out into a fun and wholesome collection of songs.
And in case you were wondering…’‘Puddinghead’ used to be a Shakespearean insult. It’s the sort of name that would’ve been angrily bellowed at someone who was unable to do a simple task properly. Perhaps a cook may have unintentionally burned a simple loaf of bread to a charred crisp, maybe a ewerer had spilled water over an important rich person or a cottar grew tired and somehow messed up his menial swine-herding. Each of these occasions may have called for this insult, whether it be screamed from the mouth of a bloated, red faced aristocrat in breeches and a ruff, or chuckled in jest by a lowly peasant. In short, ‘Puddinghead’ wasn’t usually a good thing.’

Jean Luc is a superb piece of rock’n’roll pop noir from Melbourne’s The Sunday Reeds. Taken from their EP Amour Tragique, out on August 1st on Heartgun Records, it tells of the tumultuous relationship between Jean-Luc Godard and actress Anna Karina. Their complex relationship has mirrors in a particularly bitter relationship break up in Paris, that most romantic city in the world, where founding duo Romana Ashton and Drew Jones spent three days and were evidently inspired. Joined by Jeremy Russell in 2010, the three piece toss together 90s grunge (check out the vocals), bristling blues scales and wholesome 60s pop. It’s rich and lush, dark and poised, ominously teetering on the edge of an emotional immersive collapse but all the while musically tight.

You may be aware that I am not a huge fan of water.
I find it a little intimating when it doesn’t come in well defined containers – baths, pools, bottles, etc. Even wayward spurts from a loose washer on a tap can have me squeal. But I want to, I really want to love it. Given that over 70% of the earth’s surface is water, it seems that I may be missing out on a vital and exciting part of life
