Brighton based band The Brave Faces are releasing their next single Lots of Nights Out on Friday 29 May 2020. It’s an energetic tune influenced by 80s post-punk,…

Brighton based band The Brave Faces are releasing their next single Lots of Nights Out on Friday 29 May 2020.

It’s an energetic tune influenced by 80s post-punk, shoegaze and contemporary indie. And is that an Interpol vibe I hear there? It sounds good, regardless. On this tune competing soundlines bristle as a poppy melody line pummels along over the top. Lyrically, it’s an interesting take on the rock’n’roll lifestyle – is it really the answer? Together the contemplative lyrics and spirited sonics create something that tustles with tension as it envelopes its way around your ears. The pull back and build around three and a half minutes in makes you fizz with anticipation, before the grand crescendo at the end.

Lead vocalist Darrell says: ‘Lots of Nights Out is about getting to an age by which you’d always thought you’d have it all figured out, but you still haven’t. You’re in pain, you’re worried about getting old and you feel directionless. It explores and critiques the only ‘medication’ I had at my disposal at that time of my life: going out and getting drunk. It’s from the perspective of someone reflecting on their lifestyle, talking about the time they spend trying to escape and impress other people. This track is about taking a step back and seeing this mentality for what it was to me — fun, but ultimately exhausting and damaging. The end of the song tries to encourage anyone in a bad spot that things can and do get better.’

It’s noisy – but then street harrassment and violence isn’t something you should be quiet about. Riffs fly and drums clatter in an intense fury as Saint Agnes fizz with dynamic connection on new song The Death or Glory Gang.

Saint Agnes will release their debut vinyl EP on October 12th via their own Death Or Glory Gang Records. The new video of the same name is a feminist revenge fantasy filmed by Steve Glashier highlighting street harassment.

Of the film co lead Kitty says ‘I think it’s messed up that street harassment is such a normalised part of being a woman. Every woman I know has experienced it, whether it’s catcalling, verbal abuse, intimidation, being followed. It’s such an everyday experience that you learn, from a really young age, to just let it go. Except often I’m filled with rage. Glashier asked me what I wanted to make a video about and this seemed an opportunity to take that deep burning rage and use it for something. He asked me what I would do in a consequence-free, dream reality, ‘I’d take a baseball bat to them’ was my response. So we jumped in the car and started filming. The sad irony is that even during the shoot a car slowed and began shouting stuff out the window, they sped away when they saw that I wasn’t on my own. So this video is my revenge fantasy; it’s my rage enacted, my fury on film.’

Blistering intensity, anthemic melodies and pummelling rhythms are what Spielbergs trade in, and they showcase their currency well on new tune We Are All Going To Die. It’s the first track from the Oslo trio’s forthcoming debut EP Distant Star, and they have now signed to new British label By The Time It Gets Dark. Evoking bands like Japandroids and Cloud Nothings, yet with a distinct sense of self and personality, it’s a razor sharp tune from a band with grand horizons ahead.

Starting off with a beating trip down a helter skelter, before embarking on a journey of succint verses and compelling choruses, it’s a sprawling and captivating affair. The band are heading to UK shores at the start of next year.

Smashing out pop beats and hazy guitar hooks since 2008, Lab Coast (led by songwriting duo singer David Laing & multi-instrumentalist Chris Dadge ) have done it again on For Now. Written, recorded and produced in their Calgary basement, their clever and catchy tune is filled with the lightness of spirit and sunny energy they’ve demonstrated on countless EPs, songs, albums and collaborations to date. Since the beginning, the five piece have been playing with recording techniques, embracing all things analogue, and introducing various instruments into the mix, which all adds to the wholesome sixties exuberance on For Now. The single is taken the forthcoming In Real Life LP (Faux Discx). a compilation of the best of their back catalogue, and ahead of their very first UK tour in May. See you there?

What does a garage rock duo’s take on indie sound like? Not as cliched as you might think. Eggshailer by Kent duo Teal has wafts of nineties shoegaze merging with long languorous vocals, a catchy riff that morphs into a simmering bouncing outro, and a simmering groove. It’s a world away from their fuzzy noise rock of latest track Turtongat, but proof that channelling the music and meaning doesn’t have to be confined to genre.

Because when an email arrives in your inbox about a band ‘channelling post-punk, slacker rock, G-funk and bhangra’ and evocative of names such as Missy Elliot, Police and Graham Coxon, you have to give the tune in question a listen, if only to find out just how such an inventive and eclectic mix of genres can be wound into barely over three minutes. And Film Club, the new single by Childcare, manages to do so successfully. Moving with earnest rapidity and infused with dirty sexy vibes, it builds from slightly ragged beginnings to a hypnotic chorus before breaking into global beats and a powerful call to arms as it comes to a potent and provocative end.

‘Actor is about contorting your character to fit into a disfigured view of the perfect self in order to belong. It’s about acting every day and projecting artificial images of yourself through social media and in real life interactions with others. This helps to reassure you that you are important, relevant, interesting and necessary but behind it all there’s a sinking feeling. It’s not you. It’s an act. It’s tiring.’

That’s what Irish trio whenyoung say of their fearless and bold new single Actor. Catchy and hooky, their boisterous guitar pop sounds fizzing and throbbing, the act of becoming who are you are visceral and exciting at the same time as meandering and unknown. They’re experienced musicians but unjaded, bristling with thrill and sparkle as they seek ‘the answers.’

New London four piece ISLES have recently shared their latest single Bury Me, a piece of dreamy fuggy indie pop that glistens solemnly. Amber’s melancholy vocals float over Luke, Miles and Oliver’s upbeat guitars and delicate rhythms in a sound evocative of Orange Juice or The Pastels. Arty to the core the 75% northern band are studying at Goldsmiths, and have dates lined up.
