Released December 6th 2011 on Forest Family Records

Reviewed by Francesca Baker

Lo-fi fuzz threatens to engulf us at the moment, what with breathy vocals from Summer Camp, hazey feedback from Cloud Nothings, and pretty much every guazey permeation between. On the glorious Origins Tennis take the achingly whoozy vocals and vision from debut album Cape Dory and spin it with some sixties saccharin. Forthcoming album Young & Old saw guitarist Patrick Riley, vocalist Aliana Moore and drummer James Barone head to Nashville to work with The Black Keys’ Patrick Carney. Multilayered and multicoloured, the looping melody sounds sublime when the almost dirty riff kicks in. When Aliana croons how she feels ‘a picture of fragility’ we almost believe her – and then the perfect polka dot esque chorus kicks in, and we can’t help but dance. And then that little twinkle at the end. Repeat.
Tennis’ Origins / Deep In The Woods 7 is out next month on blue vinyl (damn right) but limited to only 1000 copies, so get involved early.
