Only some of them mind, because trying to shoehorn such a deliriously rich of year of music into one succint list is, frankly, impossible. Future islands – Seasons…

Only some of them mind, because trying to shoehorn such a deliriously rich of year of music into one succint list is, frankly, impossible.
Future islands – Seasons (Waiting For You)

Thanks to Sam Herring’s bad dad dancing on the Letterman show this rousing, triumphant and exuberant tune made its way onto my playlist – and stayed there.
Caribou – Can’t Do Without (You)

I imagine that this is the sonic equivalent of raving through a technicolor speckled marshmallow.
Wild Beasts – Wanderlust

Articulate and mature songwriting, a vehement commitment to carnal exploration and superbly acerbic lyrics -‘Don’t confuse me with someone who gives a fuck.’
Only Real – Cadillac Girl

Rolling along with the slacker vibes of rooftops down and tinnies cracked open, this song drips with the scorch of summer.
Coves – Cast A Shadow

Bristling and crackling with incendiary compulsion, Cast A Shadow is one of only many unashamedly blindingly brilliant songs on Coves’ debut album Soft Friday.
Jamie T – Limits Lie
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ncIQq1PEBss
Since the Cockney cheek of Sheila Jamie T has done some growing up, but the sounds of his experiences still sizzle with as much snarl and giddy intensity as ever.
Kate Tempest – Lonely Daze

The year poetry become popular, Kate Tempest dazzled with wit, burning her perceptive lyrics into the consciousness with her dynamic and unrelenting, textured delivery.
Little May – Hide

In their music of sweet wafting auras, expansive and earnest melodies and a fizzing dance of poignant moments and happy layers, Sydney trio Little May have beguiled hearts over 2014.
Honeyblood – Killer Bangs

Angry fuzz fuelled punk, the pulsating pace seeping out of the splurge of grubby riffs and jangly guitars – no bass mind.
Sharon van Etten – Everytime The Sun Comes Up

Her voice breaks me, her songs like skin revealing a life lived, chords like deeply formed scars and a delicate gravelly voice the whisper of luminence into the darkness, deceptively inviting.
St Vincent – Digital Witness

She pouts, struts, burning high, each glare to the crowd a jolt into a slightly seedy and decadent musical masquerade – Annie Clark is quite the frontwoman. The pulsating beats, glitchy synths and energetic disco sleekness mean that her songs are not bad either.
The Away Days – Your Colours

Indie dream pop from Istanbul might not sound like the kind of thing to make it to best of list (although again I refer you to Sam Herring) but the combination of blissful pattering drums, melodies like light winds on the neck, and heavy chords imbued with dystopian anticipation illustrate very nicely that it totally works.
Alvvays – Archie, Marry Me

Whether dancing around my room with eyes closed or wandering the lush green expanse of Hampstead Heath, I spent much of summer 2014 singing out for Archie to marry me. He didn’t.

I’m lucky to be blessed with awesome friends who have equally awesome taste in music. Over the last few weeks the chat about our top tracks, gigs and albums of the year has been filling our conversations, and Jamie has been kind enough to jot down some of his own thoughts on the songs that have made his ‘Best of 2014.’

Cloud Nothings – Pattern Walks

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GiVv_rbAdHs&

I could really insert any track from Here And Nowhere Else in this spot. All visceral gut punchers and heart kickers boasting colossal sounds with a kinetic spine.

ScHoolboy Q – Man Of The Year

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rEMsjeq43_U&

Boast song of the year and a total celebration of hedonism. Really great work with the sample aswell.

Shabazz Palaces – Dawn In Luxor

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bl1O_h9sDow&

Wondrous and unorthodox as ever. Must be a great feeling to be such a unique band in this current climate. What makes it work is that they’re not trying to be different and odd, it just feels so natural.

Real Estate – Talking Backwards

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6UFO1o1QX-o

Soft and warming. The guitars float on a message most of us can relate to.

Wild Beasts – Palace

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nm8leHA_QdQ&

The juxtaposition of both old and new Wild Beasts really shines through. It tiptoes around with all elements in beautiful unison. You feel ties to previous album closer End Come To Soon, but this backs down from the rousing finale that had and yet doesn’t leave you cold.

The War On Drugs – Under The Pressure

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vkLOg252KRE&

The opening song from ‘Lost In The Dream’ sets the tone perfectly. You know what to expect and you get it. A blustery autumnal ride that makes you want to wrap up warm and go for a walk with no set destination.

Caribou – Can’t Do Without You

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DA0NG3c3I-o&

A lush tune filled with breeze and a great sense of escapism. Dan Snaith is such a safe pair of hands in any of his monikers.

Nao + AK Paul – So Good

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i2niOFBDkIY&

In the absence of his brother Jai, AK aka Anup Paul teams up with new girl Nao and utilises the little production quirks that sets them apart. Chock-full of spritely life and buoyancy.

Ben Khan – Youth

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Jou5TY7Vp8&

In a similar vein the absence of Jai Paul has made space for admirers to step up. This is the best track from the bunch. My song of the summer and delivers such a strong feeling when it kicks in.

EMA – Satellites

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DvV1eYRKRNY

Industrial fuzz that paints a bleak picture.

Jamie XX – Sleep Sound

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X_Gx2-yeNlk

Impossible for him not to conjure magic from his fingers. You can loose yourself in every single one of his songs and this is no different.

The Antlers – Palace

www.youtube.com/watch?v=E9afJSKCOQQ

So delicate you think it could crumble in your ears at any moment. The brass adds a wonderfully different texture and the lyrics thick as ever with melancholy play their part and set the scene for what is to come.

Coldplay – Midnight

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BQeMxWjpr-Y&

A fairly brave step at the time and a really interesting standalone piece that gets the right balance of ingredients. From what other new songs i’ve heard sadly this is the only time they get the recipe spot on.

Sylvan Esso – Coffee

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qr5AIKRPIHo&

Has a slight feel of a one hit wonder, but is perky, fun and sticks in your head.

iLoveMakonnen + Drake – Tuesday

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Jma1kOQyGw&

Guilty pleasure and very much a leave your brain at the door (of the club) song. He’s not very good, but has an odd magnetism to him. Great story about how this all came together.

Metronomy – I’m Aquarius

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iQS4oa-dgLY

Very poignant and considered. The layers are beautifully crafted and it all really stands out in a rather disappointing album.

Flying Lotus + Kendrick Lamar – Never Catch Me

FlyLo never stops and yet the quality of his output ever declines. The intricate bass play and ferocious sampling and beats are top notch once again. Plenty of mixed responses to Kendrick’s return this year, but this appearance holds out hope of a return to his peak.

Twilight Sad – There’s A Girl In The Corner

The thing that sets them apart from other standard bands is the power and delivery of the lyrics. They rattle inside your brain and form around your current situations.

SOHN – The Wheel

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AslPYSm7jfg

Yet to delve into the new album by How To Dress Well, but this will more than suffice until then. Evokes heavy feelings of wandering down dark city streets.

Hookworms – On Leaving

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GFP3wlEcAUc&

Modern psych that hits you full in the face with sheer sonic power. It takes you on a ride that goes up, down and through waves of drone and distortion.

It helps to have friends. On latest project Pick a Piper, Caribou’s Brad Weber is joined by members of Ruby Suns, Enon/Brainiac, Born Ruffians and Braids. Beats and bass combine under guitars in what is a successful spread eagle straddling of rock and dance, capable of being played on the stereo and at a gig. All Her Colours is taken from the short and sweet debut album (it is barely longer than an EP at eight tracks long). This will be the first full length, after two EPs, released on November 4th through City Slang, along with a slew of November European tour dates. Complex, rhythmic, with a low rumbling bass line underpinning the euphoric build, it packs a punch whilst remaining intelligent and impactful. Using a palette of instruments not usually found on the dance floor, including glockenspiels, acoustic guitar, and flute. The chorus goes a bit too sunny and breezy, almost Two Door-esque, but on the verses and builds its dark and delicious. Oh, and I love the typewriter at the start of the video. Bonus points for that one.
