A few weeks ago a small charity I work with had to let me go due to finances. I decided to give them a kind parting gift and share some simple but effective top tips for marketing on a budget.

Here they are…

Social media

Quality over quantity with social media. It’s better to do a few posts that get great engagement than spam people.

Make sure you’re doing regular analysis to see what’s working and what isn’t – I know this can be a struggle for small charities, but it’s so important to make sure limited resources are being used effectively.

Use scheduling tools to plan out your content at the start of the week/month. But also dip in and regularly check and respond to comments and posts.

Engage with people and join the conversation. Don’t just push stuff out, but be part of a community. People will remember you!

Twitter

Respond to people and engage, rather than just pushing out adverts.

Use Twitter lists. Basically these are a great way to keep up to date on topics and themes that are of interest to you.

Instagram

Follow hashtags as well as people, so you can see relevant content.

Don’t just post adverts – think about the human angle of what you do. Share photos of you out on a walk, or eating breakfast.

The best posts tell a story.

Facebook

Set up events so people see them in their feed. People will be more likely to spot them than if they have to come to your website.

Consider small paid ads that are targeted towards people with similar ads.

Post in groups such as Theatre Practitioners in London, Dramatherapy, London Arts in Health Forum etc.

Videos

Video is a powerful tool for communication, enabling people to see, hear, read, and engage in a way that goes beyond written text.

Keep it short – under two minutes is ideal.

Plan out your script before.

But don’t look down at it during filming. Keep eye contact with the camera, in a natural way.

Use horizontal/landscape orientation.

Sitting slightly off centre tends to look best.

Steady your phone on a tripod or flat surface.

Don’t zoom in or the image will be pixelated.

Face toward a window for great natural light – don’t have the window behind you or you will be a silhouette.

Make sure to have the video quality set to the highest resolution.

Charge your phone up to 100% – filming will be draining on your battery life so don’t risk running out halfway through.

Make sure you have enough memory space as video will fill it up very quickly.

Newsletter

No more than once a week.

Consider doing newsletter swaps with other organisations – see if you can feature their events in exchange for them featuring yours.

Replicate the template in Mailchimp – it saves so much time!

PR

Think about magazines and websites that have related content, and offer to write for them.

Offer free spaces to journalists so that they can experience what you do. It’s not guaranteed coverage, but a good way to build relationships.

Follow #journorequests and respond to call outs. It’s important to remember that when they ask for sources they will be inundated, so be friendly and respond efficiently to any requests.

Another great resource is AskCharity, where journalist post requests for case studies and stories.

Blogs

Adding content to the website boosts it in search engine rankings, so it should be regularly updated.

You can hook content around what you’re doing, relevant themes in the sector, as well as Awareness Days.

Design

Apply for Canva for charities to easily make fab assets.

Content

Write regular blog posts that include relevant words to the kinds of thing that your audience might be looking for. This is the bedrock of SEO. Answer The Public is really helpful here.

Resources

Check out Google Non profits for resources, included $10,000 ad grant.

Music can change the world. But in a bubblegum pop world where image matters, nice sells, and speaking out can cause a media backlash, artists find themselves stepping away from activism. Not so deux furieuses. The video for new single Time to Mourn/From Fear to Fury tells the story of a reluctant refugee leaving his war torn homeland and arriving in an unwelcoming country.

Released on 20th January 2017, all proceeds from the sale of the single via Bandcamp will go to the grass roots charity group Phone Credit for Refugees and Displaced People. They work to help keep a vital mobile phone lifeline open for refugees desperate to connect with families and to access important services and information.

As Ros and Vas explain ‘We hope our song helps make a difference by raising much needed funds. We chose Phone Credit for Refugees after meeting our Labour MP Stella Creasy at Walthamstow feminist bootcamp and she put us in touch with people who knew this fantastic volunteer group. You can see where your money is going and you are directly helping people to access important services and information and to stay connected to their families.’

Their bio reads ‘deux furieuses are an Anglo/ Scottish agit punk duo who formed in 2013 determined to use their words and music as weapons to question these troubled times’ and the whole of their album Tracks of Wire is an attempt to write about the issues we face today. However they don’t spell out particular manifestos or political mantras. ‘We would prefer that people listen to the songs and think for themselves than have them explained by us.’

The duo wholeheartedly belief in the value of music and the arts for making change. ‘We come from Greek and Scottish/Irish backgrounds and our music stands against the growing tide of suspicion and intolerance. We decided in 2013 that we had to use any skills or talent we had as musicians, as songwriters, as a band to question and challenge, to show what we stood for. Otherwise your music ultimately says everything is fine and acceptable. We also think we can help change our culture by being creative and making our own culture rather than just passively consuming it. This leads to a real communication between artists and people in different countries.’

They’ve previously contributed to the #moreincommon album in aid of Hope Not Hate, and found ‘a growing sense of horror ‘ through the experience of seeing our world fall apart in some ways, but know that ‘we have to wake up and act now to ensure our silence is not taken as acquiescence.’

But we have to finish our chat. They have to rush off and pick up their makeshift drums ready to bang outside Downing Street in protest against the UK government’s apparent complicity with Trump’s immigration policy and terrifying populist extremism. No silence here. ‘There is a time for songs and a time to take to the streets.’

We can make a noise too, helping the most vulnerable speak simple words of reassurance to loved ones, by buying Time to Mourn/From Fear to Fury here and see them live on March 18th at the LOUD WOMEN Volume 1: Album Launch Party, with all profits going to Women’s Aid.

Proving that not all charity complications require Bono to be involved, Till Deaf Do Us Party Records present A Compilation in aid of CALM Part II. Following up from last year’s album, this twenty track compliation features The Xcerts, Night Owls, Tellison, Lonely The Brave and Allusondrugs.

It continues to shock me that suicide is the single biggest cause of death in men aged 20 – 45 in England and Wales. The aim of the compilation is not just to make money for C.A.L.M, though every penny raised will go to help the charity’s wonderful work, but to promote the fact that mental illness is no longer a taboo, especially in men, and that people DO care and are looking out for them.

This isn’t just a bunch of bands wanting to put their name to what is a super important cause, but the musicians involved in this compilation have a story to tell and a reason for donating a track – each one bringing an individual take on issues faced by many every day – all of which are incredibly moving and poignant.

THE CAMPAIGN AGAINST LIVING MISERABLY (CALM) is a registered charity, which exists to prevent male suicide in the UK.

First published on Vanilla Ventures
The theme of this year’s World Mental Health Day, celebrated on October 10th, was dignity. Dignity, according to the World Health Organisation ‘refers to an individual’s inherent value and worth and is strongly linked to respect, recognition, self-worth and the possibility to make choices.’ For anyone, the knowledge that your voice is being heard and you have the ability and resources to make choices about your life is valuable and inspiring, and will enhance your experience. For individuals who may be used to being excluded and marginalised, it can be life changing.
Through their work on the Charityworks programme, trainees and graduates have explored ways for organisations in the third sector to provide services whilst enhancing one’s own sense of worth, with service user inclusion and personalisation being a recurring theme. This can take a variety of formats, including co-production, personal budgets, peer support, and user involvement.
Providing community based services that inspire and support individuals to achieve their goals, delivering the services with respect, and enabling real and long lasting change, is crucial to effective support of those with mental health issues. This approach of empowerment is a shift from user inclusion to user leadership, the latter as an approach that recognises ‘users as experts in their own mental health journeys and enables them as partners in shaping and leading services and the organisation.’
However, institutional practices, company culture, resources and staff skills can limit how far this theory translates into practice, with organisations needing to be ‘fearless and honest’ in their practices and focus on involving users. Organisations may acknowledge the importance of having a ‘culture and strategy [that] emphasises co-production, working as equal partners with the people using the service’ but they need ethos, and deliver upon their articulated promises.
With a broad service user base and limited resources providing a personal service for everyone is tough, but technology could prove to be a hugely beneficial resource. Embracing the changing environment and challenging established practices is not easy, but when done fully and wholeheartedly represents a real commitment to treating individuals with dignity. Digital inclusion is a focus for some organisations as they aim to empower individuals to access tools, communicate with professionals and stay connected. Those who have access to information about their mental health are often able to gain greater independence, access support for early intervention and continue their own recovery as they start to move away from services. What people choose to share or engage with via digital platforms can offer insight into what matters to them and this where organisations should focus.
Exploring the role of peer supporters it was found that an effective peer support programme was ‘a vital part of our commitment to service users leading on their own recovery and support.’ A shared personal experience with a focus on recovery and the future can be a hugely valuable relationship for individuals seeking support for their condition. The trainee at this mental health support organisation recommended a framework for delivering peer support that benefits everyone – the user, volunteer and organisation – and stressed the importance of an effective measurement system to demonstrate the value for everyone involved. Again, practical and tangible measures are crucial to make lasting impactful change.
One suggestion is that McKinsey’s 7S model would facilitate an organisational cultural change. The Hard S’s are areas which can be directed by management, namely: strategy, structure and systems. However, for these areas to have any real impact, the Soft S’s, which are cultural, must be understood as a pre-requisite for success. These areas include: skills, staff, style and shared values. Having the structure in place to include service users, and the staff with training and skills to include them is necessary to facilitate real change.
Harnessing the possibility of digital tools, peer support and user leadership is far from easy, as it will require a change in practice and a change of focus from everyone in both areas of governance and leadership to on the ground delivery. It will be a challenge for organisations to deliver against the objective.
However if the process of sharing power and listening to users can not only boost self confidence, result in a more streamlined and effective delivery of services, and allow resources to be directed towards the outcomes of most value, but enable service users to become agents of their own recovery, making decisions about their wellbeing and working towards a meaningful and fulfilling life – a life of dignity – it’s a challenge worth accepting.
Charityworks is the UK non-profit sector’s graduate programme. Graduates undertake a 12 month placement with an organisation in the sector, delivering a full time job and taking part in an acclaimed leadership programme. As part of their placement with an organisation operating in this sector trainees undertake research and assignments, the insight from which has informed this article. Charityworks is managed by Vanilla Ventures.

Music with a charitable bent doesn’t have to sound like Band Aid or be organised by Bono. The latest release from Small Bear Records is a four-track split cassette EP featuring two tracks each from Schizo Fun Addict and The Bordellos, available as a free download on Bandcamp, though you are encouraged to be nice and make a small donation to Save The Children.

Opener AM Story from Schizo is like a soft style Blood Red Shoes, seductively gritty and studded with reverb. Their second track is a psych fuelled lo-fi trip that mutates its way through a maze of dissonance and copulating guitars, Endorphin Portal is an earnest drugged out zenith of carefully structured electronica in which the corrugated frustration lingers long after its ending.

The Bordello’s Hit It has a bit more drive and pumping beats, catchy as hell with its meandering earworm of a bridge, whilst A Little Sadness is a sweet and melancholy flicker from a torn heart looking out hopefully towards an expansive horizon, even from the perspective of grey pavements and desolate skies. As a taster for the full length release, it’s an off kilter triumphant wonder.

26 September 2012

Reviewed by Becky Glass

It starts well: coats draped over rows of vinyl, spotlights on low, and a crowd so benevolent they’re emitting an actual glow. The semi-transformed Oxfam shop on Kingsland Roadis an enchanting venue from the off – relaxed, calm and unpretentious: quite a surprise for mid-town Hipsterville. Add the lively warbling of Kyla La Grange to warm up the crowd and you’ve got a winner.
We had a winner. Emerging quietly confident, murmuring the first notes of her first song, Lucy Rose’s voice washed over the jumble as bewitching, as natural, as warming as sunlight.
The effect is soporific and uplifting at once. It’s a folksy Feist; Laura Marling without grit. And it’s addictive: the melodies and the sound get into your head, as weirdly familiar as your own thoughts.
Appreciative, undemanding and solid, Lucy makes a natural stage presence, unaffected in conversation with the crowd. ‘This guitar is a terrible instrument,’ she says, ‘When I’m rich and famous enough, I’m going to smash it up on stage.’ I don’t believe her; I think she’d recycle it – but the affected shyness, the artful wistfulness that makes other female folkstresses so irritating just isn’t in her at all.
In these respects, she’s a joy to watch. But if there’s one thing Lucy’s music can be faulted on, it’s a lack of passion. There’s just no rough edge to her: her words are expressive, but don’t seem to connect with real emotions. It’s not the troubled, tortured cry we’ve come to expect from a girl and a guitar.
But for Lucy, therein lies her charm. She really seems authentic, truly herself in her music. It’s lovely, it’s honest, and in its insistence to be simple, it’s wonderfully strong.
There isn’t much around at the moment that can have such a hypnotic effect on you – especially live. If just for that, Lucy is worth a watch.
And angst is passé anyway.

Anyone who’s ever asked one of It’s All Happening ‘so how did the gigs start?’ will know that we are indebted to Oxjam, Oxfam’s annual festival fundraiser, and the shove that it gave us. Every year people passionate about music, their local area, and making a difference to the world organise gigs to raise money for Oxfam, and since the first first festival in 2006, Oxjam has raised more than £1.75 million – which is enough to buy 15,000 emergency shelters; 70,000 goats or 1050 classrooms.
And so it is that we’re dead excited about Oxjam Camden, whichlooks to be a London highlight this year, with their line up of folk, electronic and indie artists gracing some of the most legendary venues in the north London music hub.
Folk’sjam is a free gig taking place at the Hawley Arms on Sunday 23 October, and will feature a number of highly skilled song-crafters, as well as some top notch folk. Acts include the loop-pedal meister Chime Hours, dulcet melodies and twisted imagery from lady bards Hannah Curwood and the Good Girls and some Latino gypsy music that makes Beirut sound urban from Los Pelos Rizos, amongst others.

Hannah Curwood & The Good Girls

Next up is Lock’sjam at the…yes, Lock Tavern on Wednesday 10 October. Stick your fingers in the socket for this electronica night, with offerings including the haunting sounds of Sons Between Guns, music with ADHD from Enfant and a trip into the avant garde with Automatic Writing.

Suns Between Guns

Next, head to the stables at Proud Camden on Monday 15 October for an evening of breakthrough indie pop acts, with Arp Attack headlining and further acts to be announced shortly.

Arp Attack

The run of gigs literally ends on a bang with a round of rousing indie at the Bull & Gate on Thursday 18 October from Cinemawave, DEARJOSEPH,Turnpike Glow and the Duracell fuelled Gaoler’s Daughter.

Cinemawave

Here’s an opportunity for one oxjammy so-and-so to win a guestlist +1 for the Oxjam Camden series, plus a free drink for them and a pal at each gig. To enter, click ‘like’ on their Facebook page and cross your fingers that you’ll be the lucky one to be drawn at random from our Facefriends. There will also be runner-up guestlist passes.
Even if you don’t win (and by the laws of mathamatics, most of you won’t), we look forward to seeing you there. Because we know that as a discerning music lover, hip young thing and general good person, there’s nowhere else you’ll be.

Goodwill to all men isn’t just for the Christmas season you know – care and concern should extend well into the New Year. Hats Off Gentlemen It’s Adequate, the classic and acoustic rock covers band from Camden, have invited an eclectic mix of friends, all with only two things in common – the desire to play good music and raise money for the more than deserving Save The Children. As well as some classic rock covers from Hats Off Gentlemen It’s Adequate the crowd will be trated to the loud and chaotic Donkeybox, Jay Stapley, guitarist and deserving owner of seven platinum awards, one of the BBC’s New Generation artists Kathryn Thomas, harmonious on the flute, and singer songwriter David Lunas.
All funds raised by will go towards Save the Children’s new campaign No Child Born to Die, which aims to dramatically cut the number of children under the age of five dying from simple complications such as pneumonia and diarrhoea. The children’s charity says if children were routinely vaccinated, the death toll, which currently sits at 8 million children a year, could be cut by up to a quarter.
Malcolm, guitarist and singer of Hats Off Gentlemen It’s Adequate says ‘simple and inexpensive treatments can save children from dying. Even a small amount of money can make a huge difference. I’ve been delighted by the enthusiasm of so many great musicians to support this fundraising event.’
So head on down and lend your support.
