Because when an email arrives in your inbox about a band ‘channelling post-punk, slacker rock, G-funk and bhangra’ and evocative of names such as Missy Elliot, Police and Graham Coxon, you have to give the tune in question a listen, if only to find out just how such an inventive and eclectic mix of genres can be wound into barely over three minutes. And Film Club, the new single by Childcare, manages to do so successfully. Moving with earnest rapidity and infused with dirty sexy vibes, it builds from slightly ragged beginnings to a hypnotic chorus before breaking into global beats and a powerful call to arms as it comes to a potent and provocative end.
