London based four piece Climbing Boys have released their debut 7″ Conjoining Rite on Birthday Records, and it’s every bit the dark, powerful, post punk brilliance from the four piece that I expected. A subdued energy constantly simmers under the surface, and whilst soft harmonies on the simple chorus elevate the shuffling sneer of the verses from a dense punk melody to an almost pop sensibility, they never steer far from navigating the underbelly, knowing what works for them, and thriving on it.
Climbing Boys are a four-piece band based in East London. So far, so standard. But Tom Salo, Gavin Bowers, Emma Quick and Alex Kociuba, who only formed in late 2012 and played their first show at Barfly in November last year and they have just released their debut EP Take the Floor. Post-punk/new wave, the early 80s have been reborn in this London group, despite them barely being born in the 80s themselves. They combine a profound sort of songwriting with a sound reminiscent of early Joy Division, and David Bowie. Combining gloomy pop and hazy melodies, it’s moodily bewitching.
