On receiving Half Loon’s new track Swearword I immediately responded to their press person thus ‘Half Loon are lovely, kindy scuzzy dreamy, nice!’ That continues to be my view. A sound not dissimilar to skating across pavements, night falling, it comes in and out of focus, the occasional swoon of a guitar vying with twinkling plucking of the guitar strings. Currently undertaking a somewhat relentless recording schedule, you can expect to hear more of these guys soon.

The sixties and Britpop eras were something of a golden age for music, and The Outs are well aware of this. Noel Gallagher endorses them with Tiago Craneiro’s Liam-esque snarl, this band are oozing Oasis comparisons. But listen deeper and all they have done is listened to records off their youth, absorbed the influences, and created something wonderful as a result. Kicking off with some breezy beats before a grooving sixties lull, Right or Wrong is full of lush melodies and simple melodies that capture the nub of song writing – make direct, good sounding songs. Drenched in psych, full of flourishing keys, right through to the authentic vintage reverb ending, and available to download from 18th August.

Frenetics – Ella

Frantic and frenetic as the name suggests, this is glam rock and swaggering pop from the Yorkshire band Frenetics.

Lord Huron – Time To Run

An eclectic and electronic endeavour Lord Huron‘s Time To Run is a happy clappy tune frpm debut album Lonesome Sounds, released on October 9th, just in time to herald the end of the summer.

Andy Burrows – Company

Andy Burrows is offering up Company, from his solo album of the same name, released on Play It Again Sam, on October 22nd. The former Razorlight member deserves kudos simply for not being Johnny Borrell – this piece of raw confident indie is just an added bonus.

Coasts – Lions

You may have heard it on It’s All Happening’s July Recharged Radio show, but you can’t hear it too many times. Bristol band Coasts create charming summery indie that’s influenced by Foals and Future Islands. Second single Lions was recently released on Intruder Records.

Skint & Demoralised – When Saturday Comes

Some of It’s All Happening are more excited than others about the start of the football season, and they are joined by Skint & Demoralised‘s Matt Abbott, in this ode to the sport, When Saturday Comes, acting as a teaser to the forthcoming album.

Gallows – Last June

Fuzzy, pounding and intense, Last June is exactly what you would expect from hardcore emo punk rockers Gallows. Just don’t get involved in a twitter spat with frontman Wade MacNeil.

A while back we came across this six piece band called Story Books and thought how nice it is to see some bands from our home county of Kent, and even better to hear that they’re great. Now everyone’s in on the act Bloc Party asked them to support their recent show at the Koko, their single launch party at the Lexington last week went off, John Kennedy and Tom Robinson loves them, and Radio 1 DJs such as Fearne Cotton and Zane Lowe given new track Peregrine the kiss of cool.
Well crafted, Peregrine is a song of panoramic spectrum that manages to stay grounded and tangible in its rock roots. It builds slowly, not to a short lived peak but a powerful crunch of chords that really wraps round and delights. Filmed in the most gloomy, desolate place on earth, the Isle of Sheppey, the video is delightfully simple, and all the more emotive for it.

So, being the procrastinating human being I am, this review is like 8 months late. Oops.
[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4306i99LMXo]
So gonna start off by saying, this song is absolutely brilliant. As is the video, this whole collection of what looks like home videos, featuring guitars, sunshine, the beach, lovely things like that.
Then you’ve got this cute, ‘homey’, happy-go-lucky vibe to it. With all the whistling and reminders of the best things at home. The song describes that, yeah, home is great, and that when we get home, we love it and we’re happy so this relationship between the boy and girl, means that whenever they’re around each other, they’re happy and safe, like we are ourselves, at home.
I feel like this is a really summery song, and its not just the fact I’ve been playing this full volume in my garden… and annoying the neighbours.
SO GO AND LISTEN TO IT IF YOU’RE COOL OK. Joke, you’re on It’s All Happening, you’re already cool.

February 6th HMV’s Next Big Thing Reviewed by Katie Stanton Red Kite is the resurrected outlet for former Cooper Temper Clause guitarist, Daniel Fisher. Their sound is the…

February 6th

HMV’s Next Big Thing

Reviewed by Katie Stanton

Red Kite is the resurrected outlet for former Cooper Temper Clause guitarist, Daniel Fisher. Their sound is the sort of classic rock to soundtrack long walks along the beach and pensive moments looking out at the ocean. Tonight, there are five people onstage , including a female bassist (Laura Hegarty) who spends the majority of the set looking sultry and/or bored. When lead singer Fisher allows, Laura steps up and contributes some refreshingly sweet vocals, but those moments are too far and few between. Fisher’s experience in CTC shows he knows how to write a good song, with subtle pop infusions and emotive riffs. However, it is Hegarty’s vocals that really make the stand-out tracks and the band need to expand on that.

Red Kite

Nothing compares to effortless cool on a cold night in the Camden Barfly. It is minus temperatures outside, yet TOY arrive onstage all long-haired, apathetic to the cold and ironically, cool as fuck. TOY are another resurrection, with three members originally from Joe Lean and the Jing Jang Jong. You would never have guessed this however, as TOY’s sound is fuzzier, less poppy yet far more irresistible. Their whole set boasts a Talking Heads nostalgia that makes me want to attend an 80s prom, get rejected, then come home and cry so I can listen to this band to make myself feel better. Joe Lean and the Jing Jang Jong achieved some level of notoriety, but disbanded in 2009. A subtle reshuffle and a deeper, meaningful sound could be exactly what they needed to achieve full-blown success.
