April 23rd is UNESCO’s International Day of the Book and for the last five years, World Book Night, the annual celebration of reading and books. Across the country passionate volunteers give hundreds of thousands of books away in their communities. The aim is to reach the 35% of the adult population who don’t read for pleasure, sharing the magic of reading and inspiring them to continue with it. Since its inauguration the event has grown and flourished, and in 2014 12,500 copies of 20 different books, were given away. 9,179 Individual givers gave away 18 books each, whilst almost 80,000 books were given away in Institutions, including prisons, schools and colleges, libraries and homeless groups. A survey revealed that nearly all volunteers and recipients from last year (98%) reported enjoying the experience and the books, and encouragingly reported that 90% of Individual givers and 96% of Institutional givers felt that they were able to reach people who don’t regularly read for pleasure or own books. Check out events near you, and celebrate books.

V signs and Victory rolls, pride and passion, blackout blinds and banter, and a right good knees up. Whether it’s historically accurate or not, we associate the Blitz as a time of camaraderie and good times, when everyone lived for the now, and had a good time doing so.
The brilliant Bourne & Hollingsworth are running another of their immersive Blitz Parties on September 13th, this time over at the Village Underground in Shoreditch. Sandbags, Union Jack flags, dashing men in uniform, red lipped girls, swing dancing and bunker bars, these guys go all out to transport you back to another world.
And the cost of this time travelling experience – only £25. Bargain.

When you mention going to see live music to people in the UK, everyone immediately thinks about going to see large, well-established bands. Whilst this is undoubtedly a…

When you mention going to see live music to people in the UK, everyone immediately thinks about going to see large, well-established bands. Whilst this is undoubtedly a natural reaction it has become too dominant. Tickets for these shows are usually very expensive, and often the venues are very impersonal.
The alternative, going to see smaller bands, is not often thought about in the same way. Many people will plan months in advance to see a big band, whilst if they see a smaller band it will be a spur of the moment decision, or they will stumble into it without prior planning.
This is a shame as many of the smaller bands will put on as good a show as big bands, the tickets are cheaper, and the venues are much more personal. In terms of a night out, seeing a smaller band can be a much cheaper and more rewarding experience than seeing more established acts.
The best way to change this situation is to make gigs a proper destination for audiences. This is difficult. Part of the reason people will plan in advance for bigger gigs is that tickets are often scarce. But more importantly these big acts have advertising and promotion budgets that dwarf those of smaller bands: they can begin promoting earlier and reach wider audiences.

Smaller bands must take the initiative here and promote their gigs themselves as far in advance as they can, and keep promoting right up until the date of the show. Very often hear about a gig as soon as the band have got it, and then nothing until a few days before. The key to getting bigger audiences is to promote from the day you get the gig to the big day.
Audiences looking to find live music can use the gig search at unsigned gigs and find gigs everywhere in the UK. It only takes five minutes to sign up and list your gigs, and they will be viewed by thousands of people each month.
A guest post from Unsigned Gigs, an online gig guide for up and coming bands and artists. Audiences can easily find great live music wherever they want in the UK, whilst bands and artists can promote their gigs and music to a wide audience.

You may know that I am a fan of music, and words. Between them the two grace my shelves, fill my ears, and wrap themselves around my daily routine. One of the top places to see the two combined in a night of entertainment, is, so I had heard, Poejazzi. When the Southbank Centre and Bestival rave about them, when previous performers include Scoobius Pop and Ed Sheeran, you know that quality is high. Founded by Joshua Idehen around the premise that ‘we like our words loud,’ the Poejazzi crew are keen to stress that they are fans of what they are presenting, not dictators of taste and rules. Tonight’s event at Surya marked my Poejazzi cherry popping.

More a fan of guitars and drums than beats and loops, the music was a little lost on me. Whilst appreciating the variegated talents of Sarah Williams White, with her keys, synths, loop pedals, a vocal effects machine and the blend of electronica, soul and dub step of The Insomniax, and able to recommend their poetic beats, I can’t say I am totally keen to rush out and repeat the experience.
But the words…
We were promised that Tshaka Campbell would ‘switch all the lightbulbs in your head on.’ This was no exaggeration. The frenetic and powerful wordsmith flickered and flashed all over. Imagine Shakespeare in a duel with Ghostpoet, reading the innermost thoughts of Dante as interpreted through the lens of Graham Greene. Sentences that grab the chunk of emotion brimming in the gut and force you to confront it delivered with a unique portrayal of placid fervour, this was something special.

Rob Auton’s poetry is something of a psychedelic treat. All poets and spoken word performers do something a little bit magical to words that us mere mortals can’t; it’s why the journey home on the 139 was nowhere nearly as enlightening. Somewhat distinctive, his meditation on the colour yellow and all its hues was equally bizarre and strangely revealing. His original buttercup coloured show (literally: we had to wear yellow lens glasses) ran at last year’s Edinburgh festival, and whilst his modesty causes him to acknowledge that not everything can be life changing, there are certain moments of his set that truly are. Life, switched on. On full beam. IN CAPS LOCK.
Oh, and Jarvis Cocker has played his poetry on the radio!
Keep an eye on Poejazzi’s events page for future gigs. They will take you out of your comfort zone. Success.
