Angular pop tunes with a plasticky feel are what Shopping have made their own, and new single Initiative is no different. A jubilant feel underpinned by eighties synths and pulsing beats, it has a belligerent feel that ripples along with a vibrant trajectory.

The band are now four albums in (All Or Nothing is out on February 7th on FatCat Records), and all live in different countries. Despite that, they are as committed and focused as ever. ‘We found ourselves singing about being true to yourself, in an often binary and belligerent digital age, and reclaiming agency when it feels like our personal freedom and privacy is constantly eroding.’

Honeyblood – Babes Never Die

The electrifying Glaswegian duo Honeyblood have shared their video to Babes Never Die, the title track from their sophomore album. Capturing the visceral intensity of their firey live performances, the footage includes that of photographers, fans, and behind the scenes snippets. A sense of triumphant menace and dazzling permeates their hypnotic melodies and scuzzy bass lines, as Cat and Stina bound off each other. The album is out on Fat Cat, a label they signed to as they appreciated the ethos of their DIY beginnings, and they’ve just announced their biggest UK tour.

Some bold and angsty punk pop from Honeyblood in new single Sea Hearts, taken from new album Babes Never Die. The tumultuous waves of frantic guitar that slip over your skin suggest that the Scottish duo have seen some shattered hearts in their time, and show no remorse at creating a racket about it. Was it the departure of Shona that caused Stina to get the album’s name tattooed on her arm, and was it Stina’s heart that was broken by her friend leaving? Either way, she and new pal Cat have soldiered on and created a blasting tune that spits out contempt and has a damn good time with it.

Zooey Deschanel is bloody cool, and I defy any girl to not want to be her just a little bit. Glasgow band Honeyblood have more than a little sound of the She & Him going on. Retro rhythms, swooning melodies and twinkling substance, the duo consists of Shona McVicar on drums and Stina Marie Claire Tweeddale vocals / guitar. New song Bud is the band’s first vinyl release and debut for FatCat Records. According to their Facebook page, what they hope listeners to take away from Honeyblood’s music the pair is, ‘For more girls to start playing guitars and drums, sing songs and have fun.’ On the strength of this song, maybe in a few weeks time we will all want to be Shona and Stina. Move over Zooey.

Mazes – Hayfever Wristband

Mazes have announced a new album, Better Ghosts, a ten track mini-album (longer than some) that will be released on 21st November via FatCat Records on vinyl and digital download. This is the first track, Hayfever Wristband, and it is tight as a slinky, it curves and jitters, the metronome beat flickering away and keeping the tune on track.
In answer to the question, why Better Ghosts, well: ‘It’s Conan’s explanation of Ghostbusters 2 being superior to Ghostbusters,’ Jack explains, ‘It’s just something that we talk about a lot and it stuck.’
