Sometimes, when a little tipsy after a night out, and sitting on my sofa trying to sober myself up with a hefty portion of carbs to help prevent…

Sometimes, when a little tipsy after a night out, and sitting on my sofa trying to sober myself up with a hefty portion of carbs to help prevent the inevitable hangover, I end up browsing online shopping. Lacking in willpower at the best of times, my bank account sometimes sees some unexpected purchases in the wee hours. One I have never regretted was the buying of Yellow Bird Project’s Indie Rock Colouring Book, something I discovered in one of those retail therapy twilight hours a few years ago. Set up to harness the creativity oozing from indie musicians and direct it towards something else valuable and meaningful, its founders Casey and Matt have worked with numerous bands and artists and grown the brand from strength to strength. Here they tell us more…
How did you come up with the idea for Yellow Bird Project? Most ‘music for good’ things are around charity gigs etc, whereas here you have something really original.
Back in the uni days we spent a lot of time listening to music and we went to gigs whenever we could. We’d splurge on the occasional band t-shirt, but for the most part we found these garments to be severely lacking. Most of them were plain, unoriginal, and uncomfortable. Worst of all, they were way too expensive. It was a rare thing to find a good band t-shirt that really stood out.
So as an answer to this problem we decided to take matters into our own hands. We went out and approached some of our favourite bands, asked them to create original designs and to choose a charity. Then we built a website and printed the t-shirts to sell online, with all profits benefiting the charity of said musicians. It was really just an experiment that sort of took on a life of its own.
The film Field of Dreams is cited as one of your inspirations for the project. What was it about the film that inspired you?
‘If you build it, they will come.’ Somehow that phrase really resonates with us. In a way, it sort of embodies the whole DIY aesthetic, which is: if you create something independently and you do it because you really believe it to be good, then likeminded people will always follow in your tracks. The concept grows and the dream can be shared with other people.
The hardest part is reaching that goal, facing the obstacles in between, doubting yourself and questioning; ‘is this really worthwhile’? You put all of this time into doing something different while the rest of the world looks on as if you’re some kind of crazy person! Kevin Costner understands…
It’s a nice, eyes wide open idea, and I can imagine you being full of enthusiasm as recent graduates. Are you still hopeful that the world will change in good ways, and the charities that you work with will achieve their aims?
We’re not recent graduates anymore, but yes, we are still very hopeful!
Which may explain your new project. You’ve just launched Analog.am. Tell us about that.
Analog.am is an online, independent record store, which we launched only just recently. It’s a side-project with similar aims: to raise awareness of independent artists and encourage people to buy their music.
After 6 years of indie rock fundraising, we decided it was time to turn the page. So with all of the experience we gained through Yellow Bird, we flexed our e-commerce muscles and built a web store stocked with over 50,000 vinyl records, mostly of the indie variety, but also other genres, such as punk, blues and electronic.
CD sales are falling and store-fronts are dropping like flies, yet despite this, vinyl records sales are actually on the rise. Who knows why? Maybe it gives people a better reason to pay for music? Is it the big giant artwork, the difference in sound quality, or the nostalgia that people adore? Nobody knows for sure, but one thing this trend does indicate is that people still love music. That will never change.
Who has particularly surprised you in their creations, either in what they have designed or their hidden talents?
We got a t-shirt design from The Dears, which came from Murray and Natalia’s (front man and keyboardist) 4 year old daughter, Neptune. She managed to write her name down, which was pretty impressive, I thought.
Do you ‘read’ the designs for hidden meanings? Let’s take the t-shirts, what do you think the following ‘mean’?

Beach House
Come check out our swanky little house, it’s made of NEON! Inside, you’ll find lots of wonderful things to play with.

Beach House

The National
Everyone is connected and life invariably comes full circle.

The National

Daughter
Youth is drowning.

Daughter

If you could get any artist to design for you, who would it be, and what you hope for?
It would be by Joanna Newsom and I would hope for a horse or a unicorn. That would be my dream t-shirt, I would wear it all the time.

Conference for Festivals: ‘Capacity to Endure’
7, 8, 9 November 2012
The Southbank Centre and The Barbican

Festivals have been having a tough time of it. Thousands are held every year, spanning all types of music, arts and culture, and from a high point a couple of years ago, economic and environmental pressures have caused some crashes. A forthcoming conference from the British Arts Festival Association aims to address the question of what festivals and their futures, and how they can not only endure hard times, but contribute towards the communities and societies in which they operate.
The Conference for Festivals: ‘Capacity to Endure’ running over 7th, 8th and 9th of November 2012 at The Southbank Centre and The Barbican features a host of talks, workshops and panels, covering the spectrums of social, economic and environmental sustainability.
It’s not only due to our amateur business skills and lack of interest in accounting that It’s All Happening really do believe in the capacity for festivals to ‘do good’ for the places and faces they touch.
The ethos and emotion of a celebration of creativity is one that inspires most people to start and visit festivals, and such intangible reasons for being are also credible signs of success. One of the key speakers on Social Sustainability is Matt Burman, Head of Programme and Audiences, Warwick Arts Centre and he puts it thus ‘We need to move on from measuring impact in economic terms – the language of miserly bean counters – and talk about the emotional impact, the effect on quality of life, about values of creativity and inspiration beyond those extrinsic factors dictated to us.’
Festivals are valued by audiences and participants for their cultural relevance, the opportunity to engage more deeply in something that matters, to entertain and stimulate, reconnect and discover, and for this reason should be supported.
Contributions to cultural diversity, community cohesion are difficult to measure, but a study by BOP on the effect that Edinburgh Festival had on the city during the 2010 event found that local people were on the whole very positive. . 93% of parents agreed that the Festival event had increased children’s imagination, 89% of locals agreeing that the Festivals increase their pride in their home city, 69% saying that they were now more aware of other cultures, and 55% of reporting feeling that the event had made a difference to their well-being. For giving people kicks, as things go, festivals are surely one of the best routes for communities to go down.
For the pen pushers, political executive and bureaucratic officials, the value of festivals will always be considered in pounds and pence. Unfortunately humans have not yet advanced enough to view the world by any other scale. This event aims to ask what does social sustainability really mean, and is there a more rounded way of judging the impact of an event upon inclusivity, collaboration, community engagement, cultural stimulation – and the contribution to the coffers.

A little bit corporate, somewhat dirty, with its big wire fencing, dusty paths, and discarded chip trays, Reading Festival isn’t one I usually cite as one of my…

A little bit corporate, somewhat dirty, with its big wire fencing, dusty paths, and discarded chip trays, Reading Festival isn’t one I usually cite as one of my favourites, sometimes lacking the spirit and joie de vivre that percolates smaller festivals. However, with a big reputation, big bucks, and a big profile, it does attract some of the world’s biggest names and often has a line up glittering with long time stars and those rising up. This year was no exception, and with a Sunday day ticket and one heck of a hangover, we set out to Berkshire.

Django Django inspired some of the best dance moves of the day, with the jerking chicken dance coming out for Default, and some brilliantly synchronised Egyptian style moves for Cairo. At 2pm on a lazy Sunday afternoon, their slot probably wasn’t the best one for such infectious party music, but the NME tent still want off with a bang. In what can only be described as a Bolanesque sequined ensemble Johnny Lloyd, lead singer of Tribes, led the band in a vital and intense performance showcasing their new album Baby. Their rougueish spirit was evident, and Sappho and We Were Children in particular wrapped the crowd into their tearaway fold.
Next it was a dash to the BBC Introducing session, to watch the lovely Rachel Sermanni entrance the crowd. Rich and warm vocals, tantalising strumming, all enhanced by the ‘girls’ and their supporting strings, Miss Sermanni managed to captivate even the most unassuming members of the crowd just looking for a place to sleep off the night before, with one member of the audience articulating what everyone was thinking when he shouted out ‘I want to give you a cuddle!’ Selected by the BBC’s Ally McCrae, and about to embark on a European tour, Rachel’s debut album Under The Mountains is out on September 17th, and this performance will have driven a fair few new fans to purchase.
[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b0AWv7ATa34]
Those familiar with It’s All Happening will know that wherever The Joy Formidable are, we’re not far behind, and today was no exception. The fandom of a certain Mr Grohl has certainly done them no harm, and it was great to see thousands of people singing out long time live favourites such as Austere and The Greatest Light… From the first quivering notes of Whirring, to the final elongated feedback drenched chords of the set, Ritzy, Matt and Rhydian did what they always did – made one heck of noise, but also experimented more with volumes and tempos than previously, soothing and softening before another fuck off massive crescendo, creating glacial soundscapes that explode on a moment, perhaps a sign of what is to come from the forthcoming second album.

2:54 are dark, brooding and visceral to listen to and to see live, and Collette Thurlow’s warm and charming pleasure at seeing the crowd moved by her music made the Thurlow sisters performance all the more disarming. Kicking off with new single Sugar, they slinked and stomped through the set, all thundery skies and gritty basslines, their sweet and sinister songs proving a highlight of the afternoon.
‘Guess who’s next’ Dan asked, ‘I’ll give you a clue. It’s coming up in several months. ‘
Christmas?
My birthday?
Er, a holiday?
It was ‘winter’ and the band Zulu Winter. Dreadful game to play, brilliant band to watch. Swimming has been one of It’s All Happening’s tracks of the summer, introduced to us by the lovely Amazing radio, and its hypnotic halcyonic vibe is not alone in Zulu Winter’s live set. Bolshy and defiant drums underpinned smooth electronic feeling melodies, in what was something of a surprise stand out, full of refulgent splendour.
The respective members of Deaf Club don’t look like they should be a band, nor capable of emitting such menacing and mesmerising indie noir, but their lack of contrived image only serves to highlight the truth – that Jen Long has definitely picked up on of the UKs most talented new bands. Also on the BBC Introducing stage we caught the end of Dinghus Khan, an 8 piece band whose stage set up is almost confrontational, lining up in a row to face the crowd and deliver their raucous and rambunctious pop.
Ricky Wilson is always an entertainer, and The Kaiser Chiefs performance got any of the festival site who weren’t yet in the party spirit ready for a riot. A scratchy throat meant that some of the vocal delivery wasn’t as strong as it could be, but since the slight musical decline post their debut album, The Kaiser Chiefs are all about having fun and putting on a performance, and thus didn’t disappoint. Another band who whack up the fun factor are King Charles (and not just due to the questionable hair styles inspired by the band’s namesake) but a result of their shambolic sea shanty style tunes that had the whole of the Festival Republic stage tent bouncing and bounding.

Having gone through an image change with the release of last year’s album Skying, The Horrors played an epic charge of songs that brutally assaulted the senses whilst fully immersing and swooping you up within them. Somewhat alone in the current climate, they make intelligent and intense rock that absorbs layers from the musical canon, fused together to make their own original output. Watching The Horrors live feels like a natural negotiation, tugging and pulling at the gut and the heart, a tangle of bittersweet vocals, driving bass lines and bristling energy.

It is no secret that the UK is currently in the midst of one of its wettest ‘summers’ in recent memory. A number of festivals have become more…

It is no secret that the UK is currently in the midst of one of its wettest ‘summers’ in recent memory. A number of festivals have become more reminiscent of Iceland’s mudpools, so we could all do with a nice indoor festival, couldn’t we?
Well, luckily for us, The Bedford in Balham is hosting The London Folk Fest from July 19th-22nd 2012. With the line up including It’s All Happening favourites Alessi’s Ark, Emily and the Woods and Indigo Earth, as well as a whole lot more, this will be a festival not to miss.
In addition to the stellar line up, there will also be interactive panels, creative master classes and community initiatives over the four days. Music will take place across three stages: The Theatre, The Ballroom and The Tavistock.
Headlining the shows are Brother & Bones (“Devastatingly pure… Arena sized soul…” – IlikeMusic), Fossil Collective, Marcus Foster, Luke Concannon (formerly of Nizlopi) (“Political, intense, angular and beautiful’, Colin Murray BBC Radio 1) and the highly praised Alessi’s Ark (“A bewitching stage presence and an angelic vocal make Alessi’s Ark very easy to love”, Clash) as well as BBC Radio 2 favourite Megan Henwood.

Many of you may well have seen Alessi’s Ark at our very own all-dayer at the Gallery Cafe back on June 23rd, so you will know that she should not be missed! The London Folk Fest is set to be a great event, and it’s quite possibly the only festival you will go to this summer where you won’t have to worry about getting soaked..
Tickets are still available online and on the door. Three day tickets are available for just £30 here. For more information check out http://thelondonfolkfest.com/

On the afternoon of the It’s All Happening festival there was something rather special taking place in the chapel. Whereas most of the day was devoted to art of the auditory kind (we are a music blog after all…), taking place in the chapel was a screening of short films from some of the best independent and up and coming directors. Curated by Lara Jacoski, the 53 films were a mix of human interest and documentary, panoromic spans of popular culture. arty meditations and music videos (check out Lara’s blog on Day Job Records.)
All the films screened can be seen here…just follow the links!
