Seven renowned animators have been selected to create a series of micro-shorts, commissioned by Animate Projects and Anim18, as part of the Anim18 programme – a UK-wide celebration of British animation taking place until December 2018. The animators are: Jessica Ashman, Leo Crane, Ian Gouldstone, Anushka Kishani Naanayakkara, Osbert Parker & Laurie Hill, and Kate Sullivan. The six films include pixilation, hand drawn, digital, stop motion, charcoal, and cut-out techniques, and are designed to be playful and eye catching to be discovered in social media.

Together the films present an exciting and vibrant collection of stories exploring cultural heritage, historic curiosities, devoted communities, and ways individuals navigate modern life.

The Foundling by Leo Crane is an untold tale of abandonment and dreams. 144 Units by Ian Gouldstone was inspired by the inhabitants of the tower block in which he lives, and focuses on the mundane objects that make up daily living. Anushka Kishani Naanayakkara’s A Place to Think is a meditative film, inspired by the architecture and natural environment found at the Amaravati Buddhist Monastery. Sir John Lubbock’s Pet Wasp is by Osbert Parker and Laurie Hill and is one of their trademark ‘strange but true’ tales, inspired by turn of the century Victorian Sir John Lubbock’s story and his scientific writings on Ants, Bees & Wasps. The Stereoscopic Society from Kate Sullivan tells the story of the 3D enthusiast club of the same name.

The films will be launched on Instagram and Vimeo throughout November, shown in in the Anim18 newly commissioned VR Gallery at QUAD, Derby, from 1 November to 3 January 2019.

Anim18 is a UK-wide celebration of British animation, taking place from April to November 2018. Led by Film Hub Wales and Chapter (Cardiff) working with the BFI Film Audience Network and project partners, Anim18 showcases the best of British talent – past, present and future – through a programme of screenings, activities and events across the UK.

The story of the Kent coalfields is, as the director and producer of A Century of Coal Peter Williams told us at The Marlowe Theatre, is a ‘unique’…

The story of the Kent coalfields is, as the director and producer of A Century of Coal Peter Williams told us at The Marlowe Theatre, is a ‘unique’ one. The county is usually described as a green and verdant garden or known for its fecund agriculture. Black fuel and deep pits are things we don’t associate with Kent. Yet mining has played a key role in the evolution of some of Kent’s towns and a significant part in its people.

It was in 1890, whilst testing the viability of a tunnel under the Channel, that diggers at Shakespeare Cliffs near Dover, struck coal. Looking at maps, this made sense. If you were to draw a line between the coalfields of North Wales, Lancashire, the Black Country and mines in the north of France, Kent was right in line. It was estimated that here, in a corner in the south east of England, was ten billion tons of workable coal. Under the Chamberlain government, 18 pits were dug in the area, with it being announced in 1926 that Kent could be a new industrial black country, and one that was close to London, cutting the costs of fueling the capital.

But Kent had no history of mining, and so workers were recruited from Scotland, Nottingham, Lancashire, Wales, and other areas with a mining history. It’s these families that the film focuses on. The families of Aylesham, Betteshanger and Snowdown, villages that mining was at the centre of.

Mining always seems to have brought with it tensions and tussles. Earning more than the agricultural workers, a divide was created by the newcomers and locals right from the start. Those used to seeing green fields were worried that dirt and spoil heaps would tarnish the land. Of course, there are the strikes in the eighties, when coal towns became dark and desolate places to be, surviving only through the warmth and community that this film so brilliantly conveys existed. And the debate between the Betteshanger Pie and Snowdown Pasty, one of the biggest rivalries of all.

The film seamlessly links the history and heritage of the Kent mining towns with the development and regeneration in the county today. Villages that were almost wiped out when the collieries closed are being given funding and attention to help rebuild their communities. A Century of Coal aims to support that through raising money for the building of a mining museum, green hub and leisure space at the site of the old Betteshanger colliery. It’s not just a story about yesterday, but one that has relevance to today.

There was a certain demographic in the Marlowe Studio for The Century of Coal. Most of the audience were older and wiser than me, and as the post-screening questions revealed, had mining in their history and in their blood. I enjoyed learning more about a story I’m unfamiliar with, despite it taking place so close to home. It’s a part of history that I knew nothing of, and now feels relevant. The way of life might be gone, but the story lives on.

Mysterious and magical, Ross Blake’s delirious original soundtrack to Pretty en Rose is a delightfully mellifluous foray into the imagination. Conjuring up gorgeous visuals and poetic melodies, the London-based multi-disciplinary composer and film maker weaves a plethora of influences together to create a hallucinogenic and sumptuous musical tapestry. The soundtrack to a French documentary charting the career of French fashion designer Fifi Chachnil, you can hear the cinematic and expansive scope in every note. But it also stands alone as a largely instrumental and rich piece.

As part of Film 4’s Summer Screen 2017, taking place in the glorious grounds of Somerset House, Everything Flows: How Movies Inspire Music was a fascinating talk on the influence of films and music. Soundtracks might be evocative and expansive, gritty and bold, or romantic and meandering. Regardless, sound matters. In a panel consisting of Charlotte Hatherley, Barry Adams, Elizabeth Sankey and Jeremy Warmsley of Summer Camp, and Geremy Jasper, whose blazing, brilliant debut feature Patti Cake$ is this year’s finale they asked ‘how are musicians inspired or influenced by movies?’

Charlotte Hatherley spoke about how the alien dystopian worlds of the films that she has been working on have influenced her own musical output. So much so that she embodies the feel, and will be dressing as an alien on stage for her forthcoming gigs. Soundtracks for her are the music she enjoys, offering an immersive way to switch off and enjoy the soundscape.

‘Music is my first love.’ said director Barry Adams. He tells stories through music, with the visuals almost an afterthought. It’s not just music, but sound that creates the evocative landscapes and action of his thriller and action movies.

Summer Camp’s love of teen movies, came together in threads at the start of their career, with their first albums saturated with cinematic references in an almost band. manifesto. Elizabeth and Jeremy described their songs as ‘characters in our own little weird teen movies’ on albums that sounded like ‘chewed up VHS tapes.’ Both are currently working on film soundtracks, and expressed how inspiring movies continue to be, with there being a creative prompt to respond to an idea and visuals.

Geremy Jasper is another who loves music, and he finds that music and film are part of the feedback loop of life and art. In film it’s another language, and he uses music as a source of information to convey how characters would feel and viewers should feel. But that’s not always a conscious process. Stimulus goes in and is reimagined and conveyed in a cinematic sense.

It was interesting to hear how the musicians used film, and the directors were more interested in music, proving how creativity and art can not be confined to specific boxes.

‘I’m so fabulous!’ announces Alexandra Burke, arriving on stage as Delores Van Cartier, soul singer in downtown Detroit. But in Sister Act The Musical, it’s only when she’s joined by her sisters and dons the habit of Sister Mary Clarence that things really perk up, and the performance is lifted from an everyday service to something with spirit.

Directed and choreographed by Craig Revel Horwood, the singing and dancing is generally understated, with sporadic and overt set jokes put in place. A highlight was the slow motion battle between gangster and nuns in one of the final sequences, clever lighting slowing it down and heightening the comedic effect. The lit church arches of the stage are evocative (Matthew Wright, Set Designer and Richard G Jones, Light Designer) and even more so once Sister Mary Clarence has brought glitter and disco to the cloisters.

The cast of sisters (Karen Mann as Mother Superior, Susanna Van Der Berg as Sister Mary Patrick and Alice Stokoe playing Sister Mary Robert in particular) are charismatic and lively, working best as a collective rather than stereotyped individuals. But there’s little emotion in the audience, and it’s unclear whether this is impacted by or impacting on a lacklustre performance. Alongside some of the dated jokes is a lovely sense of sisterly solidarity and the beauty of compassion and friendship that can overcome anything.

Although overall a little average, and with some dated jokes, Sister Act is a lovely sense of sisterly solidarity and the beauty of compassion and friendship that can overcome anything. A story of music, friendship and the uplifting power of soul in all its forms.

There’s an avant garde jazz style named after the city, and Christopher Marlowe drew huge inspiration from his birth place. Throw in a vibrant student population, inspiring Kent countryside and a vigour to make things happen, and it’s no wonder that Canterbury has become one of the brightest places in the south east for quality, innovative and inspiring art and culture.
This year’s Canterbury Festival is evidence of that. The multi arts festival takes place every year, and every year becomes bigger and bolder in its diversity and calibre. Kicking off on Saturday 17th October with street performances, the programme includes creative writing and literary debates with Save As Writers, humour and laughs with Andy Hamilton and Austentatious, a hilarious improvised comedy inspired by Jane Austen, and the controversial sounding Opera Naked. A fascinating programme of talks includes Julie Summers exploring Women on the Home Front and Anthony Stattin looking at the early life of T.E. A number of walks will introduce visitors to the city and residents to its hidden secrets, whilst the beautiful Cathedral plays host to the Canterbury Cathedral Choir and London Choral Society to perform Bach’s Mass in B Minor.
With over 200 events taking place, there’s a lot to choose from, and the varied and brilliant fortnight of arts will see over 60,000 people visiting the city. Tickets are available here.

1000 Londoners is a project of films and people. Over five years a thousand people who call London home will be filmed telling their story, and the three minute videos posted on the website. A ‘unique digital portrait,’ anyone can be nominated, and as such the interviewees reflect the colourful human landscape of London. Everyone has a story. And with 8.3 million permanent residents, and another couple of million in the day through work and visiting, London is home to many stories. I chat to Reece Lipman, Film Maker on the project, to find out more.
Where did you get the inspiration for the project?
Mark Currie and Rachel Wang, who are the creative directors of 1000 Londoners and the directors of Chocolate Films (the company producing 1000 Londoners) came up with the concept for the project about 2 years ago. Since launching Chocolate Films, a social enterprise film production, in 2003, they have always created projects with a strong sense of community and community cohesion. Whether through documentaries, filmmaking workshops or community media events, bringing people from around this massive city together was always one of the company’s key aims. So the inspiration for this project really came from an extension of that idea; how do we get people in London talking, sharing their stories and understanding how everyone else lives?

A great example to highlight this was actually the genesis of the 1000 Londoners project itself. One morning Mark was filming the Duchess of Wessex in Buckingham Palace. He was sitting in this room where The Queen could have walked in at anytime, there were priceless portraits, antiques… everything you’d expect from the Palace. That afternoon however he ran a filmmaking workshop in a different part of the city with some homeless young people for a completely different project. Those intense differences in one day prompted him and Rachel to brainstorm ways to bring all of these different parts of the city together. They decided there was no better way of doing this than having people telling their own stories, showing everyone as not just a face in a crowd but an individual with a unique story. From that basic idea, 1000 Londoners was born.

So far we have seen the city from a helicopter, the sewers and the bedroom of a male escort. We’ve shot a Blacksmith, a manicurist and a former Mayor. We’ve got the opening set of films on 1000Londoners.com now including one Londoner selling replica guns and another selling the Big Issue so it’s already proving to be as diverse and distinctive as we hoped!

Do you think that this project would work anywhere else?
That has always been something we have considered. We’ve spoken to filmmakers in Manchester about the possibility of a similar project there as well as Glasgow; these big cities with history and diversity that have stories to tell. It’s the kind of project that can be transported anywhere; if it can work in London we are aiming for it work in New York or Paris.

At the moment we are purely focused on getting the word out about 1000Londoners.com. Getting people involved and getting strong films made is our main aim. Chocolate Films loves London and we want to celebrate it through our flagship project.

Back in July 2013 you posted a question on your blog “What makes someone a Londoner”? Do you think you are getting any close to an answer?
I think what we’re finding so far is that a Londoner isn’t actually something that can be defined. This is a city of 8 million people so saying that we are all grumpy, happy, busy, accepting of others etc would only end up being a crass generalistion.

What is clear though is that being a Londoner is more a state of mind than anything else. One of our key criteria is that all of the people featured throughout the project must consider themselves a Londoner, whether they have been here their whole lives or got off the plane yesterday. That means that the thing that makes someone a Londoner is that they feel a connection with the city in some way. This doesn’t always have to be positive of course but that connection, that emotional response is what we have found, so far at least, makes someone a Londoner.

Have you seen any common traits yet?
The only common trait I can think of is that people do feel strongly about the city, whether in a positive or a negative way. It’s a place which elicits such a range of emotional responses and that really is coming across strongly. For example, I filmed a woman who owns a pie and mash shop that has all the original fittings from the mid 1920s. It’s this typically London food shop with customers who have been going in for years. The woman was talking to be about how she really dislikes the fact that London is losing some of its classic buildings and as a consequence its history is disappearing. So she loved the city, felt connected daily to its past but at the same time no longer liked what it was becoming. That’s a very common trait amongst a lot of the Londoners we’ve met so far – they either love it or they hate it, there’s no real middle ground.

Whilst I guess it is necessary to do the project over five years simply due to time constraints, do you think that this means the picture will change? What makes someone a Londoner in 2014 may not be the same as in 2019?
I think the best answer to that is to have a look back over London in the past. What made Londoners Londoners 30 years ago you could say still applies today. Because of the river and because of Britain’s place in world politics and trading, London has always been a place where different communities from around the world have met and connected. Whilst places like Docklands might no longer be the manufacturing and shipping centers they once were, they are now the heart of London’s financial district- so business is still taking place where business took place all those years ago. Where the East End used to be the home of Jewish migrants in the early 19th century it is now the home of a lot of Middle Eastern and Eastern European migrants. So the community has changed but the city landscape and the way people interact with each other has stayed the same.

So in 5 years will being a Londoner mean something different? In all likelihood, no, probably not. This city has always seen change and the communities have always been very fluid but what it means to live in this city and to interact with other communities has stayed the same.

Do you consider yourself to be a Londoner?
Personally I do consider myself to be a Londoner. I grew up in the suburbs of East London and, except for a few years away, I’ve always lived here. My family were immigrants to London in about 1920 and we’ve never left. That being said though, even I’m still discovering this city. I’ve always lived north of the river so anywhere south feels completely foreign to me!

What’s interesting with this project though is that a lot of the people on the Chocolate Films team aren’t from London and have only moved here in the last few years or months. They are just discovering the city like so many of the Londoners we have spoken to as part of the project on 1000londoners.com. It’s exciting to see just what more there is to discover who the other people in this city are! We’re just at the start so I’m sure even more will be unearthed as we continue.

Everyone loves a secret,to be part of a club. A chance to play and absorb yourself in a world removed from reality. Reinvention and the dawn of a…

Everyone loves a secret,to be part of a club. A chance to play and absorb yourself in a world removed from reality. Reinvention and the dawn of a new story are alluring concepts. It’s this has fuelled the success of Secret Cinema, and has meant that for each run thousands of people part with plenty of pounds and devote days of preparation to, essentially, watch a film they have probably seen many times before. This latest instalment of the immersive cinema experience is their 21st, and it’s something of a chic celebration. The experience starts as soon as you book. Dress code instructions are provided (1920s this time), and printed props provided. We’re encouraged to read manifestos from the ‘politicians’ from the world we will be entering, although on arrival it is clear who really runs the ‘town.’ Everyone is given an identity, necessary to vote on the day. It’s a world of illicit rendezvous and shady dealings, where from the moment you arrive everyone is in on the secret.

We are shepherded into the underworld. There are around three hours of ‘free time’ before the film, which is three hours to wander and explore the myriad of rooms given over to sets and scenes. Standing chatting to my friend we are suddenly whisked away into a whirlwind of drama as a ‘gun’ fires and a car whizzes into the midst of the crowd. We then wander up stairs and down stairs, and in every corner, as much as we seek proof that this is a modern building and we are in 2014, there seems to be no detail not covered, from posters to letters to drinks to window dressing. Attention to detail is exquisite, and is one of the reasons why more time is spent on the set than watching the film.

It can be tough. Actors play their characters constantly, and audiences are encouraged to be the same, making even simple questions such as ‘what time does the film start?’ impossible. This was my second Secret Cinema and was more of an experience than a great night out like the first, and at times we were a little unsure what to do with ourselves. The abrupt personas of the actors started to grate a little at times.

But this is why you have to leave the ‘real world’ outside (although where that real world and this fantasy one sit becomes increasingly blurred, as even windows down the street are done out in 1920s style). There’s liberation in giving yourself over to this adventurous and unpredictable world. Secret Cinema describe their fuel to be ‘a desire for serendipity, experiences and beautiful random happenings.’

Secret Cinema 21 is running until May 25th. Tell everyone.

Musicians and creative artists from across the region came together to record the 45 min programme at North East Recording studios based at The Garage, South Shields.

Inspire by the 1980s TV show The Tube, produced in Newcastle for Channel 4 by Tyne Tees Television and presented by Jools Holland and Paula Yates, the project was started by Chay Blyth, and has been produced entirely by volunteers, who recognise the value of supporting their local music scene.
Colin Simpson, cameraman for the show says that ‘It’s nigh on impossible to get heard if you’re from anywhere north of Manchester, which is a shame because there’s hundreds of really hard working bands round here that are just as good, if not better, than what’s being mass-marketed nationally and internationally, they just haven’t had a national platform until now.’
Come Autumn the show will be aired on Sky TV, but until then, catch the first episodes here, or have a look at the trailer for episode five below…
