Thankfully everyone under the sun has been raving over these guys, so my less positive review will leave merely a poisonous drop in the sea of praise. They’re not bad…they’re alright…which, let’s face it is never the response one wishes their artistic endeavour to provoke.
Moving Clocks Runs Slow has the opening chords of Lost Prophets – it’s only when the Scottish accent kicks in that you realise otherwise. Either that or the guys have got lost en route to Wales.
Quiet Little Voices, the first single, is easily the stand out track, the underlying looping merry-go-round music contrasts with the raw vocals and insistent convulsing drumming to create a sound reminiscent of old demos from Bloc Party. I can already envisage thousands of revellers pumping the air when this is played during set changes at the summer’s festivals.
The main problem with this album is that the second half is far better, so by the time you’ve reached it you’re already feeling a little frustrated. Back in the day, Side A would have been worn out by the FF button.
There’s a lot going on, but the short bursts of energy are never really sustained to any depth, so it sometimes seems as if the emotion is for show rather than genuinely felt.
If the recent propulsion to success of Frank Turner et al is anything to go by, Scottish bands such as WWPJ are set to do well. That ‘such as’ is the problem – nothing marks these guys out from the plethora of other bands.
