I caught up with Leeds based L.H.B on the launch of her new album Down Yonderland, a spirited and modern blend of ambient electronics and pop makes for…

I caught up with Leeds based L.H.B on the launch of her new album Down Yonderland, a spirited and modern blend of ambient electronics and pop makes for a chilled listen of lush tunes.

When and why did you start making music?

I have been singing since I can remember. Both my Granny and Mum sang growing up and so it was something I naturally carried on with. When I was at school, I started to take singing lessons and learnt to become a classical singer.

I wanted to be able to do something with this as I grew older and so started to teach myself how to create music digitally on LogicPro. I found that writing lyrics came a bit naturally to me and I learnt how to express myself through my music as it isn’t something I’m usually able to do in person.

Who and what influences you, both musically and outside of music?

I can’t focus on one artist or one particular genre of music because I find so much of it inspiring. I like to make my way through various playlists on Youtube and Soundcloud and pick out hidden gems I might never have heard of. I also like to find an artist on Spotify or Tidal and click to see similar people until I have built up this catalogue of influential artists I can listen to.

The things that influence me, are when I hear something unusual I can’t recall hearing before. That is what I would like to do with my own music and create something outside of the norm (but still find a way to make it appealing). Two artists I can somewhat relate to are Billie Eilish and Sabrina Claudio, because although they both have strong vocals, they are also very soft in their approach which is different to hear in this day and age.

Outside of music, I suppose I love the fact that I lead an incredibly normal life. I hold down a 9-5 job in the most unexpected industry and absolutely love that I can come home each day from sitting at my desk and work on everything to do with my music. I find so much appeal in not just being your every day person and being driven to do something else at the same time.

What is your writing process like?

My writing process took a lot of trial and error before I found something that works very well for me. I will first create the track using various samples that inspire me and sound good. I will play around and write some tunes on the midi keyboard whilst using Logic Pro. Once I am happy with this part, I will set the microphone up and just start by humming a good melody to fit to the track.

I can then start to write lyrics around the melody and I tend to find this part easier to do. I actually never thought I would be able to write lyrics as I am dyslexic and struggle mostly with reading and writing, however there is something different about doing this creatively.

Once I am happy and it all fits together, I can then start adding in harmonies over the top where necessary. With the album I have released, I finished the whole process of by sending it to my cousin. He is a bit of a genius when it comes to music and he managed to write his own music to replace the original tracks. He then mixed and mastered the records so they sounded at more of a professional level.

This process works so well for me now but it took a long time to get somewhere that work. Everything used to be in a different order and it would take me a couple of years to actually finish something.

What are your goals for 2020?

In 2020, I would like to carry on gaining exposure for my album release and start working on my social media presence. I find it rather hard releasing content that people would like to view and so it would be amazing to gain a bit more of a following of people who genuinely like and understand my music.

I can then start making more of it throughout the year when I know what people like and don’t like. My true aim is that people can relate to me and my lifestyle as I am just a normal person at the end of the day.

Leeds based singer/songwriter Imi has released her brand new EP Lines, consisting of three intense tracks that meld futuristic sonics with retro vibes anddark atmospherics. Shimmering with synths…

Leeds based singer/songwriter Imi has released her brand new EP Lines, consisting of three intense tracks that meld futuristic sonics with retro vibes anddark atmospherics. Shimmering with synths and shaking with intensity, the songs bristle with metallic sheen and electronic strength. Ethereal vocals mesh with driving drum machines and foreboding melodies over the three tracks that ooze eighties yet sound modern and fresh.

‘Lines was inspired by Jim Jarmusch’s film Paterson,’ Imi says, ‘which observes the structured monotony of life, and how we squeeze joy from our passions at every liberating opportunity. The film offers a charmingly modest perception of this, but at the time it provoked some deepening frustrations at the limited prospects for myself and so many creatives. Margins explores the peak of these frustrations, offering a mocking account of my past constraints, but over time my thoughts on this have evolved. While my ambition for change hasn’t faltered, my perspective has matured in a way that is more accepting and is able to find happiness in the everyday. This is celebrated in I Feel Alright which was a real breakthrough for me personally. The Fence is the mediating balance between these two sides, and is essentially the decision you make to take control of your life and start taking responsibility for your own misfortunes or happiness.’

‘What if you did a very bad thing… but that wasn’t the end of the story,’ reads the blurb. It’s never the end of the story. As you might expect from the title All The Good Things, Clare Fisher‘s novel doesn’t take such a straightforward view. This isn’t a book about good things, but the darker ones, and the shades of grey.

At only 21 and having experienced as many of the trials of life as it seems possible to have, Beth is in prison, due to committing a crime that the world and she believes can never be forgiven. She is, in her own words, 100% TM bad. And through self punishment and ingrained thoughts will never let that go.

But her counsellor, Erika, has hope. No one is all bad she believes. Through writing about the good things that she has, Beth is coaxed to realising that she is not evil, nothing is black and white, and the past is not the future. Snapshots of Beth’s life come through diary entries, letters, care reports, social worker summaries and first person narratives. We know that there has been a mum, and a baby. We learn about relationships, failed ones. There’s a few friendships that span both circumstantial and real.

But it’s fragmented, just like her past, and it’s this method of writing that turns a sad tale into a deep and emotional one. Detail of her breakdown are in fractured prose. Intense introspection in angry stream of consciousness. The memory drives the plot and the reader is with Beth as she confronts her actions and feels her emotions. We’re with her as she builds a life. Describing a childhood friendship, Beth writes ‘Being human doesn’t just mean connecting to other humans; it means connecting the human you are now with the ones you used to be.’

Female relationships play a key role in the story, and the way that Beth speaks of her unborn daughter as her team mate, ‘us’ is tender and heartening. This baby is the first person she has believed will never let her go. An unexpected pregnancy isn’t something that Beth can walk away from – unlike the father – and neither is it something that she wants to. Yet an unmarried mother with no money isn’t always welcomed. ‘I feel that as a society we are far harsher on ‘bad’ women than ‘bad’ men; I suppose that was another motivation in writing a character like Beth.’

Beth’s history of the care system, therapy and prison all influence her personality. Clearly she is not 100% bad, but like everyone, a product of her experiences. Claire loved the experience of writing a messy character. ‘It was her difficulty and complexity which kept me writing. Most characters I write are outsiders or oddballs in some way.’ Whether you believe that they are oddballs, byproducts of a structurally damaging society, or something more sinister, it’s true that prisoners don’t usually get a voice. If writing fiction has any duties, this might be one. As Claire says ‘For me, fiction is about taking the reader somewhere they’ve not been before. This might be a psychological place, it might be a culture or society they’ve not thought about. Writing about someone in prison allowed me to delve into all kinds of new places.’

On Clare’s website she lists books she’s loved and books that make her. Authors include Emma Unsworth, Sylvia Plath, Kate Tempest and Zadie Smith. With all of these writers, ‘it’s the voice which really grabs me – a voice which is unafraid to delve into all areas of life and which has a certain zest, or swagger. ‘ Beth is vulnerable and broken, but her strong voice keeps the momentum of the novel alive, even when her hope wains.

As well as her experience of working in secondary schools and its insight into the impact of family background, Clare spent a great deal of time researching prisons, the care system and trauma, and as well as speaking with researchers visited a women’s prison, ‘which was enormously eye-opening and helpful.’ It’s not an easy book to research and write, but Clare is lucky that her home city of Leeds scene is hugely supportive of writers and artists. ‘I can’t even imagine who I would be if I didn’t read or write; both activities have hugely improved my knack for listening and noticing and asking questions – all of which make for an enriched life.’ And a deep story. A story of hope.

‘You might think I’m retarded for hoping such a thing in the light, or rather the dark, of everything that’s happened.’ she writes. There’s always light and dark, always a past and a future, always action and inertia. There’s always people. There’s always life. It’s messy and chaotic and broken and confusing yet beautiful. Filled with bad things – but a lot of good.

Singer Oliver, from Trudy, may only look 12 years old, but he has a voice like he smokes 40 a day. On All My Love here’s a sixties swing to the gravelly roll and a James Skelly like bounce to the pop pounding melodies. Like all the good songs its born from heartbreak and melancholy, but with a grit and throb to it.

Simmering with haunting vocals and swoops of quivering mournful guitar, Peter Darling‘s new track Vermilion Bay is a glorious and hypnotic contemplation on life, death, and the little moments in the middle. Like the sun lowering itself in the sky, or the changing autumnal leaves, there’s an inevitable maudlin beauty to the track, which is the first to be taken from the Mary Lou EP, out on April 6th. Telling the tale of Mary Lou Fontenot, a 22 year old from Louisiana who was murdered in 2010, it explore themes of memory, life and tradition, following the flow of Cajun funeral customs. Recorded on his mobile phone and mixed on his Mac in order to get a lo-fi, old vinyl hum and fuzz, and written according to the parameters set up by his chosen story and the themes wrapped within it, it’s a challenging and clever accomplishment from the Leeds based singer songwriter. Vermilion Bay emits a bittersweet glow, poignant and lingering long after its four minutes are over. Trembling beautifully in its melancholy, this one man eulogy fizzes with unbroken spirit and exquisite passion, and is a sad joy to hear.

In the year when the successful Camden Crawl folded, the outlook for Visions was mixed. Was the RIP of CC a sign that we are over wristband festivals,…

In the year when the successful Camden Crawl folded, the outlook for Visions was mixed. Was the RIP of CC a sign that we are over wristband festivals, or was it just that new blood is needed. After a successful debut last year, the Hackney one-dayer, with 28 bands playing across four venues, complete with a Record Fair, Comic Book convention, Tattoo art exhibition and Netil Food truck market, wasn’t so grand in scale, but succeeded in inspiration, intimacy and diversity.

In the craft beer hub Brewhouse sophisticated electropop from New Zealand quartet Yumi Zouma has elements of rolling melodies, whilst jangle pop was there in all glory at arts studio Oval Space, with guaranteed good time Veronica Falls and Mollie Rankin’s from Toronto’s Alvvays connective clamour.

Eleanor Friedberger persevered through a chatty crowd in the New Empowering Church, and playing with warm heart and soul endeared the crowd, as the delicate vocals of Swedish sweetheart Alice Boman had earlier.

The Laundry is certainly the heavy house, with the Cheetahs early set leaning to loud grunge rather than melodic shoegaze. It gets heavier for Leeds’ Eagulls, and shocktastic for Perfume Pussy. Andrew WK’s audience are there to party hard. Violent dancing, destroyed amplifiers, stage invasions and crowdsurfing, only ending as W.K’s microphone and piano were unplugged. Crazed carnage.

As frustrating as it us, when nearly all day major band clashes are on, it’s a sign of a stellar line-up is a good one. Whilst Perfume Genius played what I heard to be a deep, atmospheric and beautiful set Policia were haunting and slick as usual, there was the feeling that they may have been a bit weary after their string of festival performances.

Visions – I see a good future ahead.

Slacker punk from Leeds’ finest trio, (possibly, I haven’t done a full analysis of how number of members correlates with musical quality) this is the brilliant Tennis Court by Menace Beach. Starting of more ambient and gentle than past performances, it soon breaks into vibrant and frantic pummeling of the best variety.

Having watched a couple of their videos online and read the odd review it seemed that Fearless Vampire Killers were both receiving a range of reviews and creating a range of music, this was going to be an interesting one. In the more intimate (sweaty) surroundings of Cockpit Room 2 the small crowd was slowly growing but it was clear that Fearless Vampire Killers were still going to have to produce something fairly special to get the crowd anything like excited before the headliners, Madina Lake, took to the stage for their farewell tour.
The band set to with a frontman I didn’t recognise from the videos (Laurence Beveridge) but who produced a great variety of songs, demonstrating the bands ability to vary their approach. I would say the first few songs were more melodic than what I might have expected from a band like this and the crowd certainly seemed to respond by getting into the music and singing along. As ever, smaller bands tend to attract a hardcore following but FVK genuinely had the room going at several points, me included. A totally unexpected cover of Phil Collins’ Easy Lover was well received as was the bands own material such as Hang Low.

Not far into the set there was a frontman change to the more familiar face of Kier Kemp and the mood got a little darker, the music heavier and the crowd, after a small dip, a lot livelier. ‘Could We Burn Darling’ set the place alight and as the room filled up, the band really began to build an atmosphere and presence that had seemed at first almost nervy. This all came to a head with a fantastic rendition of their new single All Hallows Evil which has already been an online hit. Certainly FVK did not throw themselves around the stage as much as some bands I have seen but it was nice to note they focussed instead on the music they were playing and getting the technicalities of what was sometimes a complex and challenging set right.

FVK have received great critical acclaim in many magazines including being nominated for two Kerrang awards in consecutive years and headlining the Red Bull stage at Download festival 2013. Having had the pleasure to meet frontman Kemp after the gig, it was the unashamed passion of the band which really shines through both on and off stage. Their unique approach which stretches to a 334-page book giving a background story to much of their music is a unique example of this and comparisons to MCR and Panic! at the Disco are more superficial than meaningful. FVK have created new sounds, new literature and dare I say it, a new genre which mixes everything from SteamPunk to metal in one, waistcoat-clad package. Long may it continue!
