The brain is an amazing instrument. It’s widely accepted that it can become more amazing, adapting and evolving as it is exposed to new situations. It’s called neuroplasticity and is a process of physical adaptation. Seizing on this, there’s been a growing trend for brain training games, activities and apps that promise to make us smarter, happier and better people. In Override: my quest to go beyond brain training and take control of my mind Caroline Williams documents her quest to see if it is really possible.

Over the course of numerous brain experiments with top neuroscientists and researchers, she submits herself to be the guinea pig in everything from high-tech brain stimulation to meditation, by way of attention exercises and MRI scans. Conscious of her tendency to be over anxious and distracted, she tries to see if she can shift these character traits, as well as exploring whether brain training can have an impact on intelligence, creativity and the perception of time.

The book is full of fascinating facts, all of which are made accessible and explained in context. But as to whether we can take control of our own minds – the jury’s still out. Williams says that the experiments allowed her to ‘tweak’ her brain to get it into better shape for her life today, taking into account her genetics and past experiences. Some of the brain training seemed to have worked. Neuroscience evolves quickly but has yet to find conclusive answers, but she writes that ‘what I can tell you for sure is that the human brain is an amazing thing with which to play with.’ Whatever the evidence, it seems like there’s no harm in trying.

A sucker for pretty books, a passion for scribbling, and an endless curiosity mean that I’ve tried plenty of journals over the years, but Meera Lee Patel’s Start…

A sucker for pretty books, a passion for scribbling, and an endless curiosity mean that I’ve tried plenty of journals over the years, but Meera Lee Patel’s Start Where You Are: An Illustrated Journal For Self Exploration has got to have been one of the most beautiful.

Small and unassuming, this notebook focuses on embracing the process, not the product. The tasks are less tasks themselves, and more signposts to help readers along their own journey of navigating the imagination, using creativity as guidance. As the blurb says ‘Every answer is inside you.’

Short and accessible, the exercises include listing five things that always make you smile, reflecting on dreams that have not yet happened, seizing the one thing that motivates you in life and moving towards it, circling your values and looking through a different lens.

Quotes from thinkers, creatives, visionaries are illustrated with vibrant watercolour paintings in Meara’s signature style. Just by presenting those familiar ideas in a new way they are shifted and transformed, made more personally resonant through the reflection. Her early years on the New Jersey shore inspired her illustrations, and you can see the mystery and magic infuse the style, whilst the bold colours of her native India illuminate them. Even when you don’t do the tasks, as in sit and put pen to paper and write something profound, it feels as though you are still working and transforming your consciousness through the visuals.

So many of the illustrations and quotes I want to put up on my wall, and so I was thrilled to learn that Meera sells the prints. Uplifting in all ways, it’s a nice way to both look inside of yourself and expand and grow out into your life.

Jakub Tencl is a clinical hypnotherapist and healer, and his new book The Mystery of Life is his story of how he came to realise his own spiritual…

Jakub Tencl is a clinical hypnotherapist and healer, and his new book The Mystery of Life is his story of how he came to realise his own spiritual journey. He explains ‘The Mystery of Life is a picture of everything that happened in my life to help me find this
method of self-acceptance.’
This is someone’s story of someone’s life and that’s not something that can be reviewed or given a star rating. Whilst certain elements of the book I can not connect with, such as the description of his birth ‘I got in mum’s belly’ there are certainly lessons to appreciate and learn from it. Here are my top five.
‘There are no coincidences.’
People come into our lives, things happen, and experiences are felt all for a reason. Trusting in the unfolding paths of our lives will allow us to embrace the significance and value of the process.
‘Lovefullnes will convince you to see a new view of the world.’
Coming to life through a gaze of love will revolutionise everything. When we have a more tender and compassionate view of the world and everything in it, we can appreciate its qualities.
‘Being in the moment of now is not the decision, nor of intellectual understanding, but is mainly the feeling in your heart.’
Mindfulness and meditation has become trendy and intellectualized, but it’s not something that can be scientifically understood – instead it is a tuning in of the heart and body.
‘We are the creators of our world.’
Everything in life is interpreted by us, and that interpretation is what dictates the overall experience and meaning.
‘Your mind will be wider in its own potential.’
We all are blessed with infinite power, and by allowing that power to be, by not playing small, great things can happen – if we let them.
