Sunday Music Mix #16 is here! This week’s mix is curated by Francesca of And So She Thinks, a blog of fresh music and words from around the world. And So She Thinks is an addictive mish-mash of stories on travel, London, tunes and literature and this Sunday’s mix is reflective of Francesca’s varied and discerning taste. Happy listening!
[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=videoseries?list=PLlEFNl2uiVKXiT7hBpb74h36pVPrPPLoP]
(To view all the songs first hit ‘play’ then the ‘playlist’ button – first icon of five on the bottom right)
1. Tall Ships – “Vessels”
Definitely one of my favourite discoveries of 2012, and one I’m excited about seeing how they evolve in 2013. Every song sounds like standing on the edge of a cliff looking out over the epic vista of your life – and being scared and excited at the same time.
2. The Sunset Strip Club – “Einstein’s Theory”
Easy, guilty please, this bounds along with great guitar riffs and a banging bass line.
3. Vuvuvultures – “Stay Still”
Stupidly brilliant name, this is a great piece of rock music seasoned with electro disco. More complex than previous efforts, but then the less striking. And that riff 3 minutes in is almost Muse-esque!
4. Post War Years – “All Eyes”
This band are definitely up there with wine, chocolate, and sex. Amazing.
5. Charlie Dupre – “2012 Male”
Bit of impressive vocal wizardry from Charlie Dupre.
6. Mile Me Deaf – “Troubles Caught”
Superbly catchy seismic tunes
7. Fine Times – “Hey Judas”
Epic and grand, yearning and soaring, littered with peaks and valleys – and somehow it all comes from only two people.
8. Klak Tik – “Reborn”
Saw this trio supporting Slow Club, and I can totally see the link. Completely delightful, unapologetically simple pop songs. Timeless.
9. Thom Price-Stephens – “Peter Pan Shoes”
I’m a sucker for warm vocals and disarming honesty. Relationships in their gritty reality – uttered and unuttered words.
10. Secret Rivals – “Once More With Heart”
Ramshackle, chaotic, honest, soulful, and real. Gravelly emotions and gritty excitement, oscillating melodies, full of perpetuating energy.

Vienna’s Mile Me Deaf may have this country’s contemporary music slackers scared to look out from their plaid comfort blankets.
At this, their up close and personal first UK show there’s a tactile lo-fi feel around. But as the trebly petals of angst laden guitar fall and the laconic vocal delivery is in place, a widescreen pop focus is immediately evident. The splendid Heels Come Naturally kicks forth and sound like the of the soundtrack the group’s road trip all the way from Vienna with its Apache-beat groove and wayside gothic glow.
The rhythm section (especially on Rude Boy and Flo) is tight, metronomic, and in fact one of the group’s finest moments on this night is where an 80’s MBV type whammy barred element skuzzes out and delivers the frenzy of Camera and You’re a Walking Maze.
Despite a rough around the edges feel common to slacker rock, there’s a transient feel of oeuvre at times. I spotted an early Eurythmics influence at one point – and beside some toothsome noisy guitar. What’s impressive about Mile Me Deaf is the way these pop structures infiltrate in a way which makes your body move. The ramshackle Call Us Rats is almost aqueous, in some ways reminiscent of second album MGMT or Velvets.
Over in the UK for one night only, at this It’s All Happening show with The Switch and Shout Timber, me and the rest of the crowd can only applaud and thank them for their effort. Ones to watch.
It’s All Happening bring you four great bands at one amazing venue.. for free!

The Switch
The Switch are formed out of the ashes of Gift for Givers (other members of which are now in The Vaccines, Saint Saviour and Daughter). Exhilarating and effervescent, it’s the kind of powerful punky pop rock that not only makes you want to dance like a loon, but pummels you into actually doing so.

Shout Timber
“Shout Timber deliver intelligent, upbeat, melodic indie pop, subtly flavoured with Indian heritage and bona fide class” God is in the TV Zine

Mile Me Deaf
New album rated 8.5/10 in The Line of Best Fit.

A Thousand Fuegos
Incredible lo-fi indie band. Rare London show..
