All shimmering calm and a glittering expanse, Life Theough Closed Eyes is the latest video release from Hero Fisher, from her new album Glue Moon. ‘Glue Moon’, Hero says of her new album, (in part inspired by Marilynne Robinson’s 1980 novel Housekeeping,) ‘is the place in my mind I’d go to when I was writing a lot of the tracks on the album.’ Spectral at the same time as its angelic, it evokes glacial landscapes with infinite expanse, and is beautifully brooding.

The brilliant and brutal Blood Red Shoes have released a new single Mexican Dress and announced their fifth studio album Get Tragic. Mexican Dress blisters and shimmers in a business as usual fashion for the rock duo, all seething and broody. ‘This song is about the lengths people will go to for attention. Whether it’s online or in real life – small hits of validation and the feeling of having all eyes on you have become our generation’s biggest drug problem.’ says Laura Mary-Carter (vocals/guitar).

Laura and Steven Ansel (vocals/drums) had an intense few years, with incessant gigging and being with one another twenty four seven. They had to go their separate ways for a while to find out what their musical relationship meant. Laura packed her bags and bought a one-way flight to Los Angeles, a complete radio-silence between the two bandmates stretching on for months. She fell in with a songwriter’s crowd, penning tracks and collaborations with big-time pop producers and pitching songs for the likes of Rihanna. Steven went out clubbing and took a hell of a lot of drugs. ‘I don’t remember a lot about it,’ he says. ‘Classic break-up move, right?’

But now they’re back, and sounding just as bold as ever.

Released on Topshelf Records, August 5th

Field Mouse are far less timid than their name may suggest. New album Episodic sees the American band (Rachel Browne – vocals/guitar, Andrew Futral – guitar, Saysha Heinzman – bass, Tim McCoy – drums, Zoë Browne – synth/rhodes/vocals) up tempo and angst, with riffs that pound and vocals yearning with both pleasure and pain. The album is packed with guests, Sadie Dupuis (Speedy Ortiz) sings on Do You Believe Me?, Allison Crutchfield (Swearin’/Waxahatchee) lend her vocals to Out Of Context, on which Joseph D’Agostino (Cymbals Eat Guitars) also plays guitar and sings.

The grungey influences of each of these musicians is evident, with things shifting away from the shoegaze vibes of debut Hold Still Life to something more frantic and potent. Accessory is gloriously spikey, whilst Beacons is a more melodic and epic centrepiece. Some how Half Life managed to be both fast and with a gentle lilt, and title track Episodic is super bouyant, with a melody line more than inspired by Los Campesinos’ You, Me, Dancing!

The album ends with the thrashing crescendo of repeated refrain ‘it hurts’ on Out Of Context. For the listener, it’s been something of a delight.

First tune All The Birds is a rich palette of piano, harp and strings, quivering reverbs and hints of psychedelia, all laced up with her gentle but powerful vocals. A song that uplifts in its simple and sparse beauty, despite multiple inputs, it’s worlds away from her time with Lamb but does cement her position as a singer songwriter in all its essence. A vintage vibe is the result of recording friend’s studio in rolling Wiltshire countryside crammed full of analogue equipment and retro pieces. After six albums with electronic genre-benders Lamb and three solo albums to date, including the Mercury nominated Beloved One, her capacity as a songwriter has grown, and she shows no signs of becoming formulaic or predictable. Elegant and textured, it’s a joy to listen to.

Given that they are about to kick of their UK tour to support new album Motto, the one subject to rave reviews, 8/10 ratings and general buzz, Katie…

Given that they are about to kick of their UK tour to support new album Motto, the one subject to rave reviews, 8/10 ratings and general buzz, Katie Harkin, founder, writer, singer and guitarist of Sky Larkin would be forgiven for feeling nervous or frantic, buzzing about the attention she is receiving and anxious as to how to perform to the level of the bar that has been set. As it is we are sat downstairs in The Lexington, munching chips, chatting away. Only after twenty minutes or so, when soundcheck is upon them, do we realise that there has been no question and answer situation, but a genuinely nice conversation. The gregarious and lovely Katie is chatty, happy, and quietly welcoming, saying thank you at any mere hint of praise, suggesting that not only are they one of the most exciting bands on the scene, but one of the nicest.
Today they have been playing an acoustic session for This is Fake DIY, something she describes as ‘odd for band like us, but nice.’ Loud and proud, their sound is not one that would immediately translate to acoustic, but she ‘enjoyed it. There is so much muscle memory to music, and you get used to physically playing live, so it is nice to strip it back to the song. I don’t want to be bound up in the athleticism of it all, and that isn’t why I play the way I play. Just because we can play really fast and loud now, but that doesn’t always mean that we should!’
[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EycdIduOb70&w=560&h=315]
The way she plays is vibrant and vital, and the new songs have a rush of urgency that is immediate as well as intimate. It has always been this way, for both debut album The Golden Spike in 2009 and 2011 sophomore Kaleide, but the writing process for Motto accelerated the level of intensity and sound. Written whilst Katie was touring for twenty months with fellow Yorkshire band Wild Beasts, there was a need for immediacy and as she testifies, ‘there is nothing like a final boarding call or a limited few days back at home’ to force you to write.’
Whilst writing was done on the road, recording happened back in the band’s hometown of Leeds. The Leeds music scene is one that she rightly has a lot of pride in, the home leg of this tour at the legendary Brudenell Social Club being ‘the only place to be’ although confesses that she finds the hostessing element sometimes stressful. Just a day before they donated t shirts from their first album The Golden Spike to local record shops Jumbo and Crash. ‘We’re so lucky to have two independent music shops. There are cities that have massive universities that don’t have record shops. Can you believe that? Only HMVs.’
Sky Larkin’s place in the hierarchy of music is an odd one. They have been around for nearly five years, and are signed to mighty label Wichita, home of The Cribs, Los Campesinos, and Frankie & The Heartstrings, yet are still moderately small. Part of the reason for this is that although the band is ‘old’ they are ‘young.’ Right from the get go with debut single Fossil I they picked up attention from such a young age, being suddenly cast into the indie public eye right from the start, when Nestor was still at school and Kate had just started university. People shouldn’t put too much weight upon their age though. As Kate says, ‘we were just that age. We were lucky in many ways that we got attention so close to the start, it was right from the beginning. In the age of the internet everyone grows up in public, so people have always been aware of us.’

What it does mean though is that there is a clear evolving progression to their sound, and general consensus is that on Motto they have stepped up a gear with The Fly, NME and The Guardian all raving about them. Again, Kate believes this to be something that is pretty obvious. ‘Between the ages of like 17 and 24 you change a lot, and so our sound has also altered. We’ve become more mature so I guess that the sound has to. It’s not a conscious decision, but a natural evolution. Of course we have changed, so of course our sound has.’
As a label Wichita is a good place for them to be, and a great umbrella for the band, the support that comes from a mass indie label never dulling the vibrancy of the independent band. The label are sat at a table next to us drinking pints and eating burgers, all hanging out together. ‘There’s a huge deal of push and pull, we are always trying to create opportunities for each other, and we come to them with ideas and vice versa. There are no restrictions..’ In fact later on, when on stage, Katie thanks the label for responding to her text to ‘bring whisky to the stage please.’
Everywhere people have been commenting on the band’s time off, but whilst Nestor was finishing his degree and playing in Menace Beach, members changing (it was bassist Michael Matthews first gig tonight, and Nile Marr and Sam Pryor perform on the album) Katie had ‘never physically worked so hard in my life.’ Touring, learning new songs, writing the album, as well as ‘trying to be a good person to everyone at home’ takes its toll. This is the first hint that things have not been so rosy on a personal level. Losses and loves have clearly influenced the songs and the lyrics, and it wasn’t something that Katie spoke to people about until the release of Loom, her ‘fake out.’ Is the album an exorcism in some way then? ‘I can’t detach myself from what happened, and when I write I guess it all comes out, but the way they are written though means that people can read the lyrics and understand or they can take it as a pop song, the way it is.’
With a level of complexity and depth the new album reflects a game change and step up for the band, be that conscious or not. At tonight’s gig I am with three people who have never heard the band before. Each goes home and buys the album that evening. Like me they are enamored by Katie’s reticent beauty and banter, but also those immediate and captivating great pop songs, slow building gritty lyrics, and the band’s masterful stage vibrations. Sky Larkin, and Katie Harkin, have no reason to feel nervous or frantic – they have talent and tunes.

Rarely do bands from Istanbul capture the attention of the mainstream, but The Away Days are getting there, and deservedly so. Fully open about the fact that their name reflects the feeling they have of not feeling at home or belonging, their music has this wonderfully transient, viscous quality, deeply cavernous and deliciously meaningful, as well as being damn good tunes that cause nodding heads and tapping feet. One of my favourite new finds of the year, they are somewhat hypnotic, their songs instantly make your blood fizz, daubing every aspect in stupefying warmth.
Latest single Rumours is one of their most immediate, dabbling in the lo-fi shoegazey fashion, tension bristling in an unflustered but giddylingly exciting fashion. Shimmering guitars wind themselves around gentle chords, creating a delightfully drowsy yet uplifting canon of music. The unrelenting looping bass melody in Galaxies only serves to enhance the vocal crescendo that brims up like a shard of bright sunlight splicing through the room. There is an almost a relaxed air of inconsequentiality, that when combined with the talent and tenacity of the band makes everything even more consequential, a shimmering sheen suggesting that this band do matter. Dressing Room, from their debut EP, How Did It All Start, (which received support from Gary Powell of The Libertines, Ron Lewis of Sub Pop, and Simon Raymonde of Bella Union) clatters with excess energy, Oguzcan Ozen’s vocals sounding more confident than usual, the fragile note that usually pervades being left behind briefly, unlike on Hands, the lyrics ‘you got blood on your hands’ being delivered with what seems like a quiver and a lump in the throat over the syncopated skittering guitar dalliance.
The band are currently recording, working with Eliot James (The Futureheads, Two Door Cinema Club, Kaiser Chiefs), and booking gigs all over Europe and the Middle East. They impressed audiences at SXSW and The Great Escape this year, and it is only a matter of time before they reach the continents again to play.

Coinciding with details of their new album Corsicana Lemonade, to be released on November 4th on Downtown Records Austin band White Denim have unveiled new single Pretty Green. Eschewing the complex prog and jazz noodling of their debut, the song is confident and concise, immediate and startling in its ability to feel known and new. Recorded on equipment from the 40s and 70s, as well as no doubt some more modern stuff, Pretty Green drips in old fashioned groove. It’s skiffly, sketchy start germinates and blossoms into a distinct syncopated beat and caramel vocals, the whole things a defiant and confident two fingers up at all things synth and surf. But not just for the sake of it, but because that is White Denim, and the assured, unflustered and damn good delivery is intoxicating. Touring with Tame Impala in October, they will be heading to the UK in November.

Sat on Exponential’s roof top, on a windy July evening overlooking Mayfair, I have a chat with Bwani Junction, (left to right)Dan Muir (Lead Guitarist), Fergus Robson (Bassist), Jack Fotheringham (Drummer), and Rory Fairweather (Front-man) and ahead of the release of new single Papa Candy. Having patented their own exhilarating strain of something that could be described as ‘fusion funk’ or ‘skewed indie’ or ‘leek wielding’ (according to Rory, not me) or ‘Afro-Scottish’ their sound is always infectious, bristling with vigour and passionately delivered.

Having been playing together since the age of 11, meeting at school, they have grown together, and their sound has evolved with them. Papa Candy does sound like more ‘grown up’ track, evolved and matured with its rocky vibe and bolshy spirit. As much as lyrics like ‘the milkman is on fire’ can be. But then when one of the best band of all time can chat sing about ‘Sitting on a cornflake, waiting for the van to come’ they are in pretty good company. It’s nice chatting with boys. Not an insipid limp way, but the genuine buzz as they bounce of each other, chatting about their week and revisiting old stories is contagious and inclusive. They make each other laugh and they make me laugh.
A good ninety per cent of reviews or articles on Bwani Junction will use the words ‘Vampire Weekend’ as an adjective to describe them. I put this to them , and without exception they all roll their eyes. ‘I don’t get it’ says Dan. I mean the first album was all…’ and he knocks out a crisp rock melody. It’s probably something to do with the almost tribal beats that underpins the songs, no doubt influenced by Bhundu Boys, the Zimbabwean band that Gordon, manager/bantering badger/general father figure (both literal in the case of Rory and metaphorical for the rest) used to manage.
Papa Candy is out on July 14th, but as yet there are no crazy plans to support the single launch. Previous single Two Bridges famously saw the band playing on the Forth Bridge. Jack reveals that ‘we thought about playing the Eiffel Tower, it has to be somewhere higher, bigger and better. Someone, who should probably remain nameless suggests that the band mimic Muse and play in space. ‘That would be high!’
Gordon, having been quietly sipping his birthday beer throughout suggests that the best option would just be to get high. Whilst I am pretty confident the band had not partaken in any substances today, they are certainly a band looking to have a good time. ‘What’s the point otherwise?’ asks Rory. ‘Get out of your own arse’ says Dan.

One band they do respect and who are certainly not stuck up any rectal pipes are Little Comets, one of only many that Bwani Junction have toured with (The Vaccines, M, and Tribes amongst others this year). ‘They are everything that we aspire to be as a band. Tight, passionate and great lads.’ This is a very brief snippet – the actual raving about the Geordie band takes up at least ten minutes and I have to remind the guys that we are here to talk about them.
But what comes across in their testimonial is the importance of having a good time, enjoying being in a band rather than seeing it as a chore, and the belief that they have something worthwhile to deliver with their music. One of the bands they would love to support is The Rolling Stones, partly out of respect for such longevity, but mainly to ‘see if we could keep up and party with a bunch of seventy year olds.’

They envisage themselves still being in the game in at least twenty years, or at least that is when they promised me that they can reveal the real story behind the name of their new album due out this autumn, the name of which I do know but have been sworn to secrecy about… Full of brave bold storytelling and tongue in cheek lyrics, the songs, that they treat me too previews of, are wildly colourful and glisten with brilliant funk fusion.
Kindly put up by the company I work for, ad network Exponential, the interview takes place on our office balcony with a view of London, a fact that impresses the band. Dan is particularly enamoured, as is Jack, asking as he cracks open another beer ‘I love this space. Can we come and work here?’ ‘Sure’ I offer up ‘you can be our house band.’ ‘I’ll be your doorman, this place is awesome.’
Tempting as it is to have Bwani Junction knocking around the office, please, stick to the music guys. You do it so well.
New single Papa Candy is out on July 15th on the band’s own Aksatak label.
