Art rock heroes Art Brut are back with a new video for their latest single Your Enemies Are My Enemies Too. It’s a riotous piece of tongue in cheek pop…

Art rock heroes Art Brut are back with a new video for their latest single Your Enemies Are My Enemies Too. It’s a riotous piece of tongue in cheek pop rock, in the band’s inimitable style.

The video sees Art Brut frontman Eddie Argos and comedy legend Tony Slattery as an estranged pair of retired comic book foes who bond over their shared enmity for fellow comedian Michael Legge’s squeaky clean Captain Fantastic character, with relentless pop sensation Helen Love providing the rousing radio voiceover that kicks off the video.

The Alcopop! Family were brought together as it was directed by long-time collaborator Ben Pollard, who says of the concept for the video: ‘Sometimes your enemies aren’t the villains in the dark capes and masks. Sometimes your enemies are an unseen threat. Sometimes your enemies are the unknowing products of the ever-changing world around them. Sometimes your enemies are the enemies of your enemies. Sometimes you have to do things you swore you’d never do to take your enemies down. Enter our protagonist Mr Brilliant and his defiance of accepting his new place in the world. Tony Slattery was great to work with. I’m very grateful to Alcopop! Records for once again backing up my ideas, and to Eddie Argos for never once complaining when I packed him into a tiny cramped space and said ‘now turn to the camera and laugh like a freak’.’

It’s lively and brilliant, and like all Art Brut songs, addresses a very relatable issue in a left field way.

Commenting on the track itself, Argos says: ‘People in love look out for each other. One of the best things about being in a relationship is getting to double your list of enemies. This song is about that.’

The single is the last to be taken from their new album Wham! Bang! Pow! Let’s Rock Out! out now on Alcopop! Records, their first new album for seven years. Produced by award-winning folk musician Jim Moray, Wham! Bang! Pow! Let’s Rock Out! is Art Brut at their pop band best, exploring their most accomplished and innovative work to date.

The band will be touring in Spring 2020 with The Subways, who are celebrating 15 years since the release of their debut album Young For Eternity.

Lampland is the music of Brooklyn based Tommy Bazarian, who is about to release his debut album, No Mood. All distorted melodies and broken beats, this is fractured Americana that simmers with beauty. The colourful arrangements — distorted pianos, Halloween-y synths, and chopped-up drum loops – flicker in their fragments, all linked together by narrative lyrics. Bazarian wrote and recorded the songs while working his day job as a radio producer. The stories he heard during the day seeped into the lyrics he wrote at night: a patchwork of memories, movie scenes, and overheard conversations. Like its name, it is music for the low evening light, when you feel slightly in transition and unsure. Or, as Bazarian says ‘Sometimes I feel like a stack of two kids in a trenchcoat,’ he sings, ‘guessing where I’m going.’

Is it punk? Is it pop? Is it surfer? Who knows, but I like it. There’s no reinvention of the wheel here from Hampshire trio Wild Smiles, just a frantic and fuzzy that slaps you around the face like a thrashing fish whilst you stomp deliriously in a swirl of distortion. New single Never Wanted This is wildly exuberant, a testament in lyrics and melodies to never growing up.

Released on August 18th, it’s a less than gentle introduction to debut album Always Tomorrow, released on October 14th.

Coming up from PYYRAMIDS is their full-length debut, Brightest Darkest Day. Tracks that fuse catchy pop hooks and gloomy dance beats, the melancholic tripping delivery from this new duo is unique and grabbing. As should be the case from a band formed of helmed by Tim Nordwind from indie rock band OK Go and Drea Smith of the electro-pop outfit He Say/She Say, both of whom are known for meanders into other genres outside of their own ‘safe’ categorisation, this is indie disco how it ought to be done. Take note Brandon Flowers. Here’s a sneak peak of one of the standout tunes, Do You Think You’re Enough?

Some new tracks from It’s All Happening favourites No Colour. The indie ruffians have two new songsavailable for your listening pleasure, delivered in the sparkling pop vein by way of a punky attititude. The older track, Stranger was recently recorded by the band in Stoke Newington and mixed at Milou Studios, and rushes and rambles with intent, headlong into a soaring chorus and endorphin driven melodies. Alas we didn’t make it down to the last Agree In The Dark gig night, which was part of the East London Film Festival and Zine-East Fringe Festival (all of the brilliantly curated nights are also accompanied by a zine – get in), but if they go off like this song of the same name, we’ll definitely be partying happy at the next one. Both tracks are available from No Colour’s bandcamp page, and all you have to do is give your email address. Not a bad little exchange.

Released November 7th 2011 on Schnapps House

Reviewed by Francesca Baker

My initial thought was ‘Oooh, they remind me of Pulp.’ Anyone who knows It’s All Happening, or myself, will aware that this is emphatically. A. Good. Thing. The occasionally venomous lyrics plinky piano and bouncy melodies employed by The Standards are used to an alchemic effect to create a songs so catchy that your find your heart beating to them long before your head starts to process them. All this is true on latest single Mice, offhand comments made in a slightly soiled yet soothing voice tossed amongst moody riffs as it swerves with menace to a ridiculously simple and catchy chorus. Despite being doused in Carnaby Street style, there are some surprises chucked in; the trickling guitar post chorus sounds almost Catalan and even the la la la’s sound like an essential ingredient in the quest for the perfect pop song. Love it.
