Channy Leaneagh explains the meaning behind song, which was written after she fell off a roof and smashed her L1 vertebrae and battered her spine, leaving her in a brace with limited mobility for months.

‘Laying in bed, as I healed from a 10 foot fall of carelessness with my life, I would dream of running in green grass and tears would pour from my eyes. Running in the tall tear grass; imagine wanting life and the want remains. That is a feeling to hold onto; that life is worth living even when all the towers are crumbling and this goes beyond my own little accident but the world around me. Following the crone into the sinking ship and having the chance to return without a shadow. Drive on, Drive on. A second chance you won’t forget.’

It’s an album about the redemptive power of rewriting your story in order to heal, and reclaiming your identity as a result. It’s about working to erase the anger, regrets, and fear that accidents can have – and emerging fresh. It’s about driving on.

‘Saint Cyrus is named after the area that I was living in at the time – in the same house that I wrote and recorded the entire record” says SHHE. “The house backed onto a main road so recording during the day wasn’t possible. Most of the vocals were recorded during the night. The synth line which enters half way through the track was also recorded during this time, half awake, half asleep. I only recorded one take, that’s the take that you hear on the record.’

She continues: ‘The track is in constant transition. When I wrote it, I was thinking a lot about identity. How no one is ever complete. Things are added, taken away, obscured, manipulated; certain characteristics, behaviours. In the track there are parts that disintegrate, disappear, are reintroduced elsewhere. But the words stay the same. Living there (in Saint Cyrus) was the only constant when everything else was in transition at the time. I think that environment encouraged a lot of change in my life.’

Of the track guitarist and writer Fred Hickey tells us ‘TV Show is a pretty obvious song thematically. It’s a lot less cryptic than most tunes we do; with fairly brazen lyrics. It’s observing the weaponisation of trivial gestures in the pursuit of some strange fame. Features of being a normal nice person are now worn like badges of honour and buying a coffee is worthy of screaming from the digital rooftops. At the time we wrote it the world really felt like a big casting call with the allure of shiny stardom causing us all to scratch at the stars. I guess we just turned that into a video. There’s no rhyme or reason as to why the characters in the video are doing what they’re doing because it doesn’t seem like there’s a good reason for us all to be doing it in the “real” world.’

Saint Agnes will release their debut vinyl EP on October 12^th via their own Death Or Glory Gang Records. The new video of the same name is a feminist revenge fantasy filmed by Steve Glashier highlighting street harassment.

Of the film co lead Kitty says ‘I think it’s messed up that street harassment is such a normalised part of being a woman. Every woman I know has experienced it, whether it’s catcalling, verbal abuse, intimidation, being followed. It’s such an everyday experience that you learn, from a really young age, to just let it go. Except often I’m filled with rage. Glashier asked me what I wanted to make a video about and this seemed an opportunity to take that deep burning rage and use it for something. He asked me what I would do in a consequence-free, dream reality, ‘I’d take a baseball bat to them’ was my response. So we jumped in the car and started filming. The sad irony is that even during the shoot a car slowed and began shouting stuff out the window, they sped away when they saw that I wasn’t on my own. So this video is my revenge fantasy; it’s my rage enacted, my fury on film.’

The pop perfect track is visceral and vibrant, with slices of analogue flicker, electronic euphoria and bristling guitars. It rushes with lusting urgency whilst keeping taut and potent, before descending into a spiralling outro with spoken overdubbing from Brix Smith.

The band will be heading around the UK in October.
