On ShitKid’s new album This Is It, Åsa Söderqvist tries to replicate The Strokes and sing like Julian Casablancas, fails dismally at it, but still produces some stellar garage rock with an edgy vibe and crisp rhythms.

She says of the album, released on PNKSLM Recordings:

‘This Is It was recorded the same way as my earlier music just also inside my Volvo V70. I was inspired by The Strokes while writing it which is how it got it’s name. ‘Is This It’ was one of my favorite albums and I’ve been wanting to sing like Julian Casablancas since I heard it. I tried for this EP but in the end I guess This Is It doesn’t sound like Is This It at all.’

Deliciously laidback slur of a vocal over guitars that tinkle with giveafuck youthfulness, Joy of Romance is the latest tune from High Sunn, the dream pop project of 17-year-old Justin Cheromiah. Based in sunny San Francisco, he seems to have spent his time strumming away. Since the age of 14 he has released thirty singles, EPs and full albums. Hopeless Romantic is the first one to be recorded in a studio, and with his mates too. Recruiting Joe (drums), Freddy (lead guitar) and Ari (bass) the bedroom musings now take on a fully rounded feel, but still capture the cool meanderings of teenage explorations. Released on 19th May via PNKSLM Recordings.

Bold and brave, ShitKid don’t only stand out with the name, but with this messy and brash second single 666 prove to be capable of delivering the kind of angst fuelled perfect punk tune. Clocking in at barely two minutes it grabs the listener by the scruff of the neck and drags them through whoops and moans, frantic guitars and pulsing beats before coming to an abrupt stomping stop.

The project of 23-year-old Åsa Söderqvist based in Gothenburg, Shitkid has its origins in 2015, when Söderqvist started recording on a half-broken computer while trying to learn her way around Garage Band as a way to deal with shyness and anxiety, and sounds anything but timid. As soon as the music was online, she turned away from it, focusing on acting and making the music for a short-film series named Stargazer by Linda Hedström.

Four months later she reached out to Stockholm label PNKSLM Recordings, and the first fruit of the collaboration was ShitKid’s official debut single Oh Please Be A Cocky Cool Kid, which was released earlier this month. The raucous 666 will be followed by the self-titled debut EP on April 1.
