Regular readers of IAH will know that it’s no secret how much we love the Oxford music scene. We have blown the proverbial trumpet, released records by, or…

Regular readers of IAH will know that it’s no secret how much we love the Oxford music scene. We have blown the proverbial trumpet, released records by, or hosted gigs of many an Oxford band including Secret Rivals, We Aeronauts, Spring Offensive, Gunning for Tamar, Stornoway, Gullivers and The Cooling Pearls. Then, of course, there is the marvellous Truck Festival (and record store) and Nightshift Magazine as other examples of why Oxford has a thriving scene.
Luckily for us, Club Fandago and PinDrop Performances have teamed up to bring a ‘Best of Oxford’ night at the Buffalo Bar in Highbury and Islington. Doors are at 8pm and full stage times can be found below.
Headliners Secret Rivals have just released their new single ‘Everything I’ve Lost’, which is free to download from their website. It’s a great little tune which has been receiving some great reviews and was used for the Premier League goals wrap on Sky’s SoccerAM. A small number of limited edition copies of the single will be available to purchase at the gig.
Here’s the awesome line up:
Secret Rivals – 10pm
Deer Chicago – 9.15pm
Empty White Circles – 8.30pm
And that’s not all! Jon Spira, Director of ‘Anyone Can Play Guitar’ will be DJing between the bands. All that for just £5 OTD or £4 advance/ with a flyer. Advanced tickets can be purchased here.

Anyone who’s ever asked one of It’s All Happening ‘so how did the gigs start?’ will know that we are indebted to Oxjam, Oxfam’s annual festival fundraiser, and the shove that it gave us. Every year people passionate about music, their local area, and making a difference to the world organise gigs to raise money for Oxfam, and since the first first festival in 2006, Oxjam has raised more than £1.75 million – which is enough to buy 15,000 emergency shelters; 70,000 goats or 1050 classrooms.
And so it is that we’re dead excited about Oxjam Camden, whichlooks to be a London highlight this year, with their line up of folk, electronic and indie artists gracing some of the most legendary venues in the north London music hub.
Folk’sjam is a free gig taking place at the Hawley Arms on Sunday 23 October, and will feature a number of highly skilled song-crafters, as well as some top notch folk. Acts include the loop-pedal meister Chime Hours, dulcet melodies and twisted imagery from lady bards Hannah Curwood and the Good Girls and some Latino gypsy music that makes Beirut sound urban from Los Pelos Rizos, amongst others.

Hannah Curwood & The Good Girls

Next up is Lock’sjam at the…yes, Lock Tavern on Wednesday 10 October. Stick your fingers in the socket for this electronica night, with offerings including the haunting sounds of Sons Between Guns, music with ADHD from Enfant and a trip into the avant garde with Automatic Writing.

Suns Between Guns

Next, head to the stables at Proud Camden on Monday 15 October for an evening of breakthrough indie pop acts, with Arp Attack headlining and further acts to be announced shortly.

Arp Attack

The run of gigs literally ends on a bang with a round of rousing indie at the Bull & Gate on Thursday 18 October from Cinemawave, DEARJOSEPH,Turnpike Glow and the Duracell fuelled Gaoler’s Daughter.

Cinemawave

Here’s an opportunity for one oxjammy so-and-so to win a guestlist +1 for the Oxjam Camden series, plus a free drink for them and a pal at each gig. To enter, click ‘like’ on their Facebook page and cross your fingers that you’ll be the lucky one to be drawn at random from our Facefriends. There will also be runner-up guestlist passes.
Even if you don’t win (and by the laws of mathamatics, most of you won’t), we look forward to seeing you there. Because we know that as a discerning music lover, hip young thing and general good person, there’s nowhere else you’ll be.

In 2010 Rob Young published through Faber & Faber Electric Eden: Unearthing Britain’s Visionary Music, a narrative survey that mapped out a native British musical voice that reflected the complex relationships between town and country, progress and nostalgia, radicalism and conservatism. To accompany the acclaimed book he has handpicked 36 songs that are ‘designed to follow the flow from acoustic to electric folk in the late 60s and early 70s, a magical time in British music’ to be released on Electric Eden, out now on Universal.
Featuring a mixture of rarities, unheard versions, familiar names and those that slipped by unnoticed, he is ‘particularly proud of including a rare original version of A Sailor’s Life by Fairport Convention, literally the first time a rock drum kit was ever used on a traditional folk song. History in the making!’
Howl Griff, the singer and band, will be releasing their third album Fragile Diamond on October 2012. Their first album was Welsh language only, and therefore unintelligible to 99.9% of the world, but by truly having to let the music and melody do the talking they received critical acclaim and rave reviews, withdescribing their sound as that of a ‘Welsh Brian Wilson.’ Full of blistering riffs, anthemic melodies and lush soundscapes, Fragile Diamond is a great example of the Anglo-American rock that has beguiled fans worldwide. Head to The Albany on Sept 20th for the launch party.
A treat for the weekend. This is Thomas, by Lancashire band Endeavours. Skem’s finest have produced a heartening song about why music inspires the passion it does, with a great melody, warming vocals and a bouncing rhythm. Awesome.

It is no secret that the UK is currently in the midst of one of its wettest ‘summers’ in recent memory. A number of festivals have become more…

It is no secret that the UK is currently in the midst of one of its wettest ‘summers’ in recent memory. A number of festivals have become more reminiscent of Iceland’s mudpools, so we could all do with a nice indoor festival, couldn’t we?
Well, luckily for us, The Bedford in Balham is hosting The London Folk Fest from July 19th-22nd 2012. With the line up including It’s All Happening favourites Alessi’s Ark, Emily and the Woods and Indigo Earth, as well as a whole lot more, this will be a festival not to miss.
In addition to the stellar line up, there will also be interactive panels, creative master classes and community initiatives over the four days. Music will take place across three stages: The Theatre, The Ballroom and The Tavistock.
Headlining the shows are Brother & Bones (“Devastatingly pure… Arena sized soul…” – IlikeMusic), Fossil Collective, Marcus Foster, Luke Concannon (formerly of Nizlopi) (“Political, intense, angular and beautiful’, Colin Murray BBC Radio 1) and the highly praised Alessi’s Ark (“A bewitching stage presence and an angelic vocal make Alessi’s Ark very easy to love”, Clash) as well as BBC Radio 2 favourite Megan Henwood.

Many of you may well have seen Alessi’s Ark at our very own all-dayer at the Gallery Cafe back on June 23rd, so you will know that she should not be missed! The London Folk Fest is set to be a great event, and it’s quite possibly the only festival you will go to this summer where you won’t have to worry about getting soaked..
Tickets are still available online and on the door. Three day tickets are available for just £30 here. For more information check out http://thelondonfolkfest.com/

Sharing their name with a Roman Fort in South Shields, Arbeia make the kind of music that feels like a light wind on your neck…accompanied by a knotty…

Sharing their name with a Roman Fort in South Shields, Arbeia make the kind of music that feels like a light wind on your neck…accompanied by a knotty rush of adrenalin. Slow and dreamy melodies are underpinned by syncopated beats that build into almost pop music refrains before the sharp shock of the chorus and its rappelling riffs. Watch the video to Elements here. It meanders, it builds, it dazzles, it shifts, and its brilliant.

The world wide web is saturated with.. stuff. Cool stuff, funny stuff, boring stuff, secret stuff.. the list goes on. However, every now and then you stumble across a real find. One that makes you smile, or stops you in your tracks.
‘Cardhouse’ from Liverpool band All We Are feels like one of these. It’s a three and a half minute tune packed with twisting harmonies and a real dreamy feel about it. Check out the tune, and the video, below:
This wonderful track is available as a free download from here. The track is also available on the trio’s ‘We Hunt’ EP, which is available now through Payper Tiger Records.
