It’s lazy to describe an album titled Cinema as cinematic, but I’m going to do it anyway. Skylar Gudasz’s second album is expansive, broad and multi sensorial. Intimate and inviting, her sultry voice rings out sassy vocals over flickering and potent timbres. Surging strings vie for attention with murmuring melodies, transporting the listener to other worlds, even at the same time as being entirely relatable. Intricate guitar and piano work plays next to a gritty vitality and groove, and there’s an edgy and energetic drive to it all. Smart and cutting, smouldering and smooth, it’s a brilliant album from a top talent.
