It’s always nice to see a band doing things their own way, and Spring Offensive are certainly a band who do just that. The excellent new single ‘Not Drowning But Waving’ has a video that was created and directed by the band themselves.
Spring Offensive guitarist and video creator/ director Matt Cooper states “The video takes the song’s narrative beyond the central event, investigating the burden and consequences of guilt; the main character’s reenactment of the drowning by wearing the dead man’s clothes and filling the bathroom with things from the beach, could stem from this or from a desire to experience what it is like for the victim”. You can watch the video for yourself, here:
[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z4b0HYxOSvI&w=560&h=315]
Not Drowning But Waving is available digitally now and available to pre-order on vinyl from 10th September 2012.

Anyone who has listened to the IAH radio show (don’t worry, nobody else does either – check out the listen again here http://rechargedradio.com/), will know that we have a massive soft-spot for Oxford. The scene, the bands – the architecture – it’s got everything we love about medium sized cities. In fact, we love it so much we dedicated a whole show to it! Of all its virtues though it is Truck Festival we love the most.
Our favourite child from the festival family, it has always had a special place in our drunken heart – whether it be breaking into the now defunct barn to interview Alphabet Backwards, keeping a tent going with pedal power, rocking out to ChewLips in a ‘stage’ no bigger than a wendy house, purchasing ice cream from the local priest, Dead Jerichos and Spring Offensive in the Last FM tent in 2011; Los Campesinos and Blood Red Shoes on the main stage in 2010, or Joy Formidable tearing up The Barn and Chew Lips busting out awesome dance moves in 2009

But, it was whilst at last year’s Field Day that we heard that Truck was apparently no more. An actual gasp left our mouths, before a tear formed in the eye. A victim of it’s own ambition and the economic crisis, it had been consigned to the festival waste bin along with Phoenix, Electric Gardens and many others. Or so we thought! With new partners in the shape of the Y-Not festival promoters, Truck is back, marking it’s 15th Anniversary and coming with the prospect of being better than ever! Smiles of glee all round!
With headline sets lined-up from The Temper Trap (riding a crest of a wave after their second album release and playing their biggest shows to date) and Mystery Jets (festival stalwarts who know how to bring the party), it’s also the depth of this year’s line-up that impresses and excites. Friday’s main stage sees the likes of local heroes Fixers, Irish balladeer Villagers and one-man music machine Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly hitting the stage, with the added touch of variety (in every sense of the word), coming in the shape of Australian big-hitter Tim Minchin. Saturday also keeps the quality levels turned up to 11 with the likes of Emmy the Great, British Sea Power, Dog is Dead and the The Low Anthem in attendance.

Further down the bill on the second stage sees some of the newer darlings of the new music world – King Charles, Lucy Rose, Theme Park to name a few – rubbing shoulders with the more established names of Guillemots and Scottish rockers Frightened Rabbit. Not to be out done, respected labels Big Scary Monsters and Alcopop have taken over the Barn stage lining up a stellar collection of acts including Johnny Foreigner, Spring Offensive, Gunning for Tamar, Dead Jerichos, Three Trapped Tigers and Future of the Left.
With only a couple of weeks to go we are too excited for Truck – even with monsoon weather outside the window. With one of it’s strongest line-ups for years, mixing the best local talent with more established acts, we cannot wait to get back to those rolling Oxfordshire hills, grab a pint of ale and dance ourselves stupid till the small hours.
A limited number of tickets are still available at just £69 from www.truckfestival.com
Here’s four of the best local bands, to whet your appetite.

A soothing somewhat sumptous tune and a direct haunting video. Welcome to the video for Carrier by Spring Offensive. Directed by Nicky Davidson, with cinematography by Robert Self, the oscillation between sparce chilling blank canvas and intense sparks of anger pretty perfectly encapsulates the architecture of a Spring Offensive melody. A B-side to their upcoming single Worry Fill My Heart which is super secret until the 17th of March….(shhhh)…

Released on January 2012 on Woodthief Records

Reviewed by Francesca Baker

The second of a set of three singles from Scot band My Tiny Robots, Zut Alors is a song of ambitious yet fully achieved architecture that. Opening with an almost country twang on vocals from Dylan Childs and Ryan Marinello, and padding along like Modest Mouse meets The Coral, we soon are hurled into thunderous vocals, morphing disco beats. Like Wild Beasts and Spring Offensive, My Tiny Robots have created and delivered a captivating sense of discord that sits perfectly. The quirky and faintly farcical chorus of ‘Je t’adore, baby, zut alors’ alongside such expansive and epic song structure is a masterstroke which enables the track to be at once sweetly silly and full of muscular doggedness. Great.

So now we know that it’s not the end of the world, what’s coming up in 2012? This is the stuff we’re already getting excited about.

Daughter – We were lucky enough to see Elena Tonra (aka Daughter) play at the beautiful St Giles in the Fields church in London just before Christmas and she absolutely blew us away. We’d been meaning to catch her for months, but events always conspired, but nothing could have prepared us for one of our gig highlights of the year. On some levels she will be pigeonholed as another ‘girl with a guitar’, but there is much more to her music. We’ve seen it described as ‘dream-folk’ and ‘ghostly’, which isn’t too far wide of the mark, with the kind of subtle soundscapes that the XX do so well adding depth to her music. If we’re honest she had us hooked after one listen of Landfill, but live she really is something special. With a date at Islington Assembly Hall already in the diary for April and many more around the country, we really hope 2012 is her year.
Listen to and buy both her EPs here.
Lucy Rose – Really excited to hear the full album from Lucy Rose. Having done the backing vocal rounds with Bombay Bicycle Club, this year is definitely her time to shine as an artist in her own right. With a voice to melt the heart and some beautifully crafted songs she’s sure to do well this year. Expect a BBC member or 2 on backing as well.
[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=adBPg8Zdp2g]
Alt J – We wrote this on seeing them live a couple of months back… ‘The last couple of years haven’t been short on intelligent, earnest ‘indie’ music, but where say Wild Beasts skirt the fine line of irritating pretentiousness, Alt – J seem more accessible in their own abstractness and imagery, but no less intelligent or intriguing in their performance and sound. On this showing, they’ll certainly be heading for the upper ends of the ‘ones to watch’ lists for 2012.’ – we’ll stand by that…
Social Network here–
Breezeblocks (demo) by alt-J
The Maccabees
Ascending and descending through the depths of all emotions, the title track from latest album Given To The Wild is a departure, brimming with wavering soft ambience, but the gritty guazey guitars, stop start rhythms and dashing assault of psychological similes that made The Maccabees one of our favourite bands remains. ‘We’ve grown up as people and changed as a band,’ guitarist Felix White said recently. ‘We’ve learned for the first time what we really wanted The Maccabees to sound like on record. It’s taken us three albums but we finally achieved that. We’ve discovered what we’re truly capable of and that feels really exciting.’ Sounds it.
Blood Red Shoes

Their Facebook bio may describe them as just ‘another fucking roll’n’roll band’ but we know different. Scuzzy riffs, rip em up guitar work and a blistering pace, Blood Red Shoes consistently deliver behemoths of tunes, and the follow up to Fire Like This and Box Of Secrets won’t be any different. Besides, since when has being a rock’n’roll band been bad? Some narrow minded twit called David A Noebel stated on his spoken word album The Marxist Minstrels back in 1974 that rock’n’roll ‘music is loud, primitive, insistent, strongly rhythmic and releases in an undisguised way the all-too tenuously controlled, newly acquired physical impulses of the teenager. Mix this up with the phenomenon of mass hypnosis, contagious hysteria and the blissful feeling of being mixed-up in an all-embracing, orgiastic experience, and every kid can become ‘Lord of the Flies’ or the Beatles.’ Sounds bloody brilliant doesn’t it?

‘It’s a miracle it’s even happening. We’re just here to have a party. On our own terms.’
Sentiments It’s All Happening fully agree with – sometimes the blood, sweat and tears that goes into organising a gig is not wholly reflected by the number of bodies in the audience. That’s when you have to remember that good music and a good time are the real measures of success. From the looks if this video Spring Offensive seem to have had both. Selling out in less time than it takes for the UK to announce another recession, the top secret, ticket-holders-only, free Christmas show that Spring Offensive organized as their end of year celebration for the whole ‘extended family’ took place on 14 December, at the East Oxford Community Centre. Sam King from BBC Oxford Introducing was there, and captured the night beautifully…
Spring Offensive // 1914s // Pandas and People // Les Mistons
Thursday 8th September
The Bull and Gate
It’s common knowledge that IAH are avid listeners of Amazing Radio and huge fans of Spring Offensive, so it was difficult to contain our excitement when we found out the two would be teaming up. Thursday 8th September will see the first gig in a series of new monthly nights that Amazing Radio are holding at The Bull and Gate as a showcase for new music. If the strength of the launch night line up is anything to go by then this is sure to be a great addition to the London live music scene. Tickets are just £5 and more information is available here.

It’s All Happening have frequented Oxfordshire’s Truck Festival for the last 4 years. This year, Truck 14 doubled in capacity and had a large makeover in terms of layout and becoming three days rather than two. On the Friday night Spring Offensive played a storming set in the Last FM tent to a large crowd. It’s All Happening caught up with them on the Saturday morning (which goes someway to explain the shaky camera work and tired faces!)..
