In his signature enigmatic style, Father John Misty has delivered the video for Things It Would Have Been Helpful to Know Before the Revolution, one of the stand out tunes from latest album Pure Comedy. Directed by Chris Hopewell and recorded in only three weeks, the video lends a tongue in cheek vibe to the heavy stark reality that the song describes. Grandiose, as expected, there’s also a vulnerability in tone and content. Puppets from the video will be auctioned off from August 3rd – 13th and the proceeds will be donated to the Environmental Defense Fund. “Father John Misty’s new video is a powerful statement — a postcard from a world we never want to visit,” said Eric Pooley, Senior Vice President at Environmental Defense Fund.

To celebrate the announcement of their European tour, including a data at London’s Scala on November 24th, Braids have released the video to Taste. Taken from their third album Deep In The Iris, Taste is a delicate and emotive track, messy and confusing like a therapy session played out to music. The accompanying video beautifully shot by Kevan Funk, is powerful, raw and honest, exploring the fragility of being and relationships, both with ourselves and others.

“I was feeling pretty good about everything so I just made stuff that made me happy.” That’s what songwriter Dylan Baldi of Cloud Nothings has to say about their new album Hear And Nowhere Else (out now on Wichita), and more music should come from such a happy place. Not that it’s all grins and rainbows – with the start of their world tour the band have released the grainy video of granite fuelled fuzz bomb Now Hear In, splices of grainy, manipulated, archive and shot footage that follows “a loose cyclical theme of identity and ego-birth/death” (director Jordan Blackmon of Toro Y Moi and Fork & Spoon Records fame). Deep shit.

Beautiful strings and sketchy beats, glitchy synths and soaring wails, soft cooing vocals and powerful assertions, vulnerable verses and acidic cutting choruses, on new song Beating Coves have taken every genre, every sound, every tactic, every noise, thrown them together without depleting the power of the individual but making every single one greater than the some of its parts. At three minutes in we are treated to what sounds like swooning woodwind, which has no right to be there, but works gloriously. Robust and rousing, it grows into a mystifying blooming crescendo, the disintegrating relationship Beck Wood sings off dissipating into an ethereal and energetic spacey tune. Bubbling with hiss, crackling synths, its full of disintegrating snarls and giddy intensity, all delivered with cinematic sleekness. Some shoegaze, C86, dreampop, disco, goth, psychedelia, everything we have come to expect from Coves since their formation in 2011, and their debut EP Cast A Shadow which was released last year is here to full effect. Just fantastic

Salt Cathedral have launched their newest video Fields, a delightful and sparkling set following a ageing and ailing man discovering glimmers of joy. Flickering with steady patterns of sonically colourful ephemera, interspersed with lush harmonic vocals, all over a cantering beat, the song is built of many layers, Dripping with mesmerising and cinematic ambience, it’s a tale of unfinished self-reinvention, and is one of many brilliant track’s from the Brooklyn based (although multi national originating) band’s debut EP.

Despite having only lived here for four years, and spent 14 months of that looking for houses elsewhere in London, and 22 months on trains and buses back from other places in the city, a certain level of pride swells up in me when I hear a band from West London. So it is with Beneath The Wave. Angular math rock softened by glistening pop melodies, this is danceable intellectual indie, that cites references as wide spanning as Igor Stravinsky to Steven Stapleton, and includes samples EP from Professor Brian Cox, Phillip Glass, Charles Manson, Duke Ellington and the film American Psycho. Second Circle is the lead track from their debut EP Ubiquitous Meter, which is available at any price you want to pay from their bandcamp.
