A balmy evening and neoclassical square might not seem the perfect setting for Warpaint, but they like to challenge convention. Smoke drenched shade and purple spectrum lighting provided the backdrop for their angsty art-rock, the second of Somerset House’s Summer Series gigs. Tougher than most dreampop bands, their shimmering pop has a strong shudder to it that reverberates under the balmy skies. Kicking off with Heads Up the title track off their 2016 album they move through the albums, including their 2010 breakthrough The Fool. Elephants veers on hallucinogenic, whilst Whiteout is stealthy and potent and So Good’s dominant bassline powerful. The biggest cheer goes up for Love Is to Die whilst the dance moves come out for their poppiest tune yet New Song. Emily Kokal and Theresa Wayman’s guitars fuzz and somersault with thick reverb, whilst drummer Stella Mozgawa keeps rhythm with daring vibrancy and Jenny Lee Lindberg’s soaring bass and stage chat keep the crowd engaged and buoyant. As the night ends to the notes of Disco//Very it’s clear that Warpaint belong here tonight alright.

Swim Deep – King City

Released May 14th on Chess Club Recordings

Evoking blissful summer days and carefree moments, King City is a jaunty insouciant tune from Birmingham band Swim Deep. The simple almost tossed away chorus of ‘with the sun on my back it’s a nice day,’ its fuzzy warmth, drumming footprint, and the thrilling pace of the tune make it one to put on repeat. On the surface it’s an ode to Jerry Lee Lindberg (the Warpaint bassist), summers lazing on the beach, skating with friends, downing shots and flicking through vinyl (as seen on the video by Marshall Darlings), and its beauty is in realizing that it doesn’t need to get any deeper than that. Contentedness never sounded so good.
