After recently announcing her debut self-titled album, Harkin is sharing new single Up To Speed from the record, which is due out April 24th via Hand Mirror. Long a fan of Katie Harkin’s music, right from the days of Sky Larkin, I had a chat to find out more…

So you’ve been around a while, since your early days with Sky Larkin. Yet your self-titled album is your debut. Has it felt a long time coming?

It has! But I didn’t want to make any compromises, and I was making it in secret for such a long path of the gestation, so the record took its own natural path until it was done.

Why did you decide to set up via the label Hand Mirror, which will also have literary and event outputs, with your partner Kate Leah Hewet?

Culture has been emotional scaffolding for me my entire life, it has made the world porous and open. We want to now in turn be able to offer that scaffolding for others.

You wrote the album in a remote cottage in the Peak District. What did that offer you that travelling around the world didn’t?

It kept my ambition in check, the city fuels the ambition for the man made, to awed by the highest building. Whereas out in the peaks my sense of awe came from things I could never hope to replicate. I love touring but it was thrilling to be based somewhere that felt untameable.

What have you learned in your years in the music industry?

Hmmm, remember when to take a break! I’ve certainly run myself into the ground to the point of hospital visits before, not wise.

You have been a touring member of Sleater-Kinney, Wild Beasts, Flock of Dimes, and Kurt Vile and Courtney Barnett. How is it different from being in your own band or performing for yourself?

It’s wonderful to be given the keys to wander around in someone else’s music, it’s been a great education as a self taught guitarist! I could’ve have asked for better teachers, I’m very grateful.

Sorry to mention it, but Covid-19. You’re obviously rescheduling gigs and changing plans at the moment. There are loads of free streams and great initiatives coming together. How do you think the coronavirus crisis will impact music in the long term?

The true magnitude of this global crisis is, at the time I write this, yet to reveal itself. So it’s hard to know how to answer this question. At this stage there are a lot of wealthy high profile artists streaming lots of performances for free , which is providing entertainment for people, but normalizing a culture of free content doesn’t help smaller working musicians. It’s tough, I click on those videos like everyone else! Also looking forward, in order to support artists we also have to support infrastructure, the small venues that foster culture are part of our ecosystem, we’re all connected.

Sundays should be all about you. Sometimes you don’t want to be having to go anywhere or be anything. At Citadel you don’t have to. Taking place in Victoria park, Hackney on Sunday 16th July, it’s like someone has plonked your living room in the middle of a park and filled it yoga, arts and creativity, delicious food and local beers. That’s before you get to the fantastic line up of music. Laura Marling, Wild Beasts, Bonobo, Foals are just some of the big names on the bill, as well as Stevie Parker, Vessels, Oscar Jerome and other artists making their way up the musical ladder of success. And of course Sundays would not be the same without the newspapers, and Sunday Papers Live will be bringing their blend of culture, comment and comedy to the event, with their stage being graced by the likes of Sofar Sounds, spoken word collective Apples & Snakes, marathon runner Amy Hughes, explorer Dave Cornthwaite, comedian Andy Zaltzman and more.

When Citadel Festival was first born, I had reservations about the longevity and meaning of its life. Did London really need another festival? Did the UK need another family friendly event? But they’ve been building on their successes, and this year bring an amazing line up of quality artists to Victoria Park on Sunday 16th July 2017.

Foals play their only UK festival appearance, and indie legends Wild Beasts will also be whipping the park into a dark trippy frenzy, and the ubiquitous and brilliant Bonobo mixes things up. If you’ve tried to get tickets to see Laura Marling recently you’ll know that even selling multiple limbs won’t secure them, so the opportunity of seeing her on a (hopefully) sun drenched stage in summer is one not to passed over. Communion welcome to their stage soulful Michael Kiwanuka, Sylvan Esso, rockers Twin Peaks and Nadine Shah, whilst Clash & Last FM turn things up a bit with Vessels, and welcome Ben Howard’s new band A Blaze Of Feather.

You’ll also find Sunday Papers Live, Sofar Sounds and journalism experts The Frontline Club, as well as the Science Museum, FuturePlay and The Indytute offering creative exploration and events. All festivals these days need yoga and swing dancing, and Citadel is no different, bringing on board SwingTrain, Frame and the House of Voga for a dose of wellbeing. There’s also some acoustic sessions, the must see Roller Skating Fiddle Players, a family rave from Big Fish Little Fish, some sports games, theatre – and a ton of street food and craft ales.

All in all, they’ve proved me completely wrong. Nice one.

Buy tickets now.

Sheepy are a punk pop indie rock band, a group of musicians with a self confessed propensity for absorbing the music they love and whittling out hooky tunes…

Sheepy are a punk pop indie rock band, a group of musicians with a self confessed propensity for absorbing the music they love and whittling out hooky tunes and familiar melodies. Latest record Wild EP was released last week, and to find out more about the band and recording, I had a chat with Luke Jones (vocals and guitar) Ollie Fontaine (drums and vocals) whilst Villy Raze (bass and vocals) was busy planning world domination.

Punk pop indie rock – that sounds like you can’t decide. Do you like all kinds of music?

O:We do like all kinds of music. Villy is the Punk, Ollie is the rock and Luke is the pop song writer. But we get classified with lots of genres.

L: we may have a dance/hip hop album out some day.

Tell me about the album – how have you progressed since the last and is there any evolution in your music?

L: Wild EP is the new 4 track album. The songs have more of a groove and are a bit longer in length than some of the fast paced punkier stuff on our last album. The last track Life Is Like A Ghost Train is one of the first I recorded and it’s spooky sound works well with the other songs.

O: When we were making the last album we had dozens of tracks to choose from, which came from our live gigs. The new EP we didn’t narrow it down and we hadn’t played these songs before.

Do you think Liverpool has had any influence on your music?

L: Yeah. I think most cities have a ‘sound’ and we used to grow up playing and listening to other local bands. One of the new tracks Jeremiah Horrocks is about a 17th century astronomer who lived a mile from me In Liverpool. Songs like Glum are influenced by the people and places around me. But Liverpool most definitely isn’t glum.

You’re involved heavily in the music scene outside of playing in a band – has this helped you musically? I feel like the more collaborative and involved people are, the greater input they are prepared to put into their success, is this the case?

There is a great underground music scene in Liverpool, we try to go to as many local gigs as possible and get bands over to play when we can.

L: We’re also getting to know a lot more of London musicians and bands, where our label are based. This is just something we’ve always done. Musicians should look after each other, not try and compete.

What is success for Sheepy?

Success is being able to tour and play for a living. For where we are the next level is getting a booking agent and playing bigger gigs and festivals regularly. We’re not motivated by money, just the love of gigging, making music and seeing people enjoying the music we’re doing.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

L: Wonk Unit, Slaves, and Jungle.

O: Alabama Shakes, Spring King, Happiness and Saves the day

13 albums in what, 7 years, is prolific. Is it an urge to create, a desire to be heard, tons of ideas, or lots of fun? How do you check the quality and decide what to release?

L: I’ve always had a constant urge to write music since I was young. When I hear a song, I want to write a song. We’ll usually jam out some of my ideas and Villy and Ollie will take it to another level. We’re all songwriters and we are now writing more collaboratively than before.

Here some of that songwriting on new EP Wild, out now.

Latitude Festival marks its tenth birthday this year, and is throwing its usual Suffolk party with an extra bang. The line up was announced yesterday, with Years & Years, Alt-J, Wild Beasts, Noel Gallagher and Django Django all hitting the music stages, along with the variety of literature, art, comedy and cabaret performances that will spread across Henham Park over the weekend of 16th-19th July.
Natasha Haddad, music programmer, probably explains the vibe best. ‘Music, arts and emotions go hand-in-hand and we’re so lucky to have an audience whose appetite for these covers such a broad spectrum; from the hands-in-the-air euphoria of Jon Hopkins, Caribou and Kiasmos to united sing-alongs during Noel Gallagher, Manic Street Preachers and Laura Marling, Latitude will also embrace the celestial moments of Portishead, James Blake and Sun Kill Moon.’
This year’s theme is ‘For Richer, For Poorer, For Better, For Worse’ – but as things stand the weekend will be rich and better one for certain.

Only some of them mind, because trying to shoehorn such a deliriously rich of year of music into one succint list is, frankly, impossible. Future islands – Seasons…

Only some of them mind, because trying to shoehorn such a deliriously rich of year of music into one succint list is, frankly, impossible.
Future islands – Seasons (Waiting For You)

Thanks to Sam Herring’s bad dad dancing on the Letterman show this rousing, triumphant and exuberant tune made its way onto my playlist – and stayed there.
Caribou – Can’t Do Without (You)

I imagine that this is the sonic equivalent of raving through a technicolor speckled marshmallow.
Wild Beasts – Wanderlust

Articulate and mature songwriting, a vehement commitment to carnal exploration and superbly acerbic lyrics -‘Don’t confuse me with someone who gives a fuck.’
Only Real – Cadillac Girl

Rolling along with the slacker vibes of rooftops down and tinnies cracked open, this song drips with the scorch of summer.
Coves – Cast A Shadow

Bristling and crackling with incendiary compulsion, Cast A Shadow is one of only many unashamedly blindingly brilliant songs on Coves’ debut album Soft Friday.
Jamie T – Limits Lie
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ncIQq1PEBss
Since the Cockney cheek of Sheila Jamie T has done some growing up, but the sounds of his experiences still sizzle with as much snarl and giddy intensity as ever.
Kate Tempest – Lonely Daze

The year poetry become popular, Kate Tempest dazzled with wit, burning her perceptive lyrics into the consciousness with her dynamic and unrelenting, textured delivery.
Little May – Hide

In their music of sweet wafting auras, expansive and earnest melodies and a fizzing dance of poignant moments and happy layers, Sydney trio Little May have beguiled hearts over 2014.
Honeyblood – Killer Bangs

Angry fuzz fuelled punk, the pulsating pace seeping out of the splurge of grubby riffs and jangly guitars – no bass mind.
Sharon van Etten – Everytime The Sun Comes Up

Her voice breaks me, her songs like skin revealing a life lived, chords like deeply formed scars and a delicate gravelly voice the whisper of luminence into the darkness, deceptively inviting.
St Vincent – Digital Witness

She pouts, struts, burning high, each glare to the crowd a jolt into a slightly seedy and decadent musical masquerade – Annie Clark is quite the frontwoman. The pulsating beats, glitchy synths and energetic disco sleekness mean that her songs are not bad either.
The Away Days – Your Colours

Indie dream pop from Istanbul might not sound like the kind of thing to make it to best of list (although again I refer you to Sam Herring) but the combination of blissful pattering drums, melodies like light winds on the neck, and heavy chords imbued with dystopian anticipation illustrate very nicely that it totally works.
Alvvays – Archie, Marry Me

Whether dancing around my room with eyes closed or wandering the lush green expanse of Hampstead Heath, I spent much of summer 2014 singing out for Archie to marry me. He didn’t.

Over the last few weeks the chat about our top tracks, gigs and albums of the year has been filling our conversations, and Jamie has been kind enough to jot down some of his own thoughts on the songs that have made his ‘Best of 2014.’

Cloud Nothings – Pattern Walks

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GiVv_rbAdHs&

I could really insert any track from Here And Nowhere Else in this spot. All visceral gut punchers and heart kickers boasting colossal sounds with a kinetic spine.

ScHoolboy Q – Man Of The Year

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rEMsjeq43_U&

Boast song of the year and a total celebration of hedonism. Really great work with the sample aswell.

Shabazz Palaces – Dawn In Luxor

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bl1O_h9sDow&

Wondrous and unorthodox as ever. Must be a great feeling to be such a unique band in this current climate. What makes it work is that they’re not trying to be different and odd, it just feels so natural.

Real Estate – Talking Backwards

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6UFO1o1QX-o

Soft and warming. The guitars float on a message most of us can relate to.

Wild Beasts – Palace

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nm8leHA_QdQ&

The juxtaposition of both old and new Wild Beasts really shines through. It tiptoes around with all elements in beautiful unison. You feel ties to previous album closer End Come To Soon, but this backs down from the rousing finale that had and yet doesn’t leave you cold.

The War On Drugs – Under The Pressure

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vkLOg252KRE&

The opening song from ‘Lost In The Dream’ sets the tone perfectly. You know what to expect and you get it. A blustery autumnal ride that makes you want to wrap up warm and go for a walk with no set destination.

Caribou – Can’t Do Without You

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DA0NG3c3I-o&

A lush tune filled with breeze and a great sense of escapism. Dan Snaith is such a safe pair of hands in any of his monikers.

Nao + AK Paul – So Good

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i2niOFBDkIY&

In the absence of his brother Jai, AK aka Anup Paul teams up with new girl Nao and utilises the little production quirks that sets them apart. Chock-full of spritely life and buoyancy.

Ben Khan – Youth

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Jou5TY7Vp8&

In a similar vein the absence of Jai Paul has made space for admirers to step up. This is the best track from the bunch. My song of the summer and delivers such a strong feeling when it kicks in.

EMA – Satellites

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DvV1eYRKRNY

Industrial fuzz that paints a bleak picture.

Jamie XX – Sleep Sound

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X_Gx2-yeNlk

Impossible for him not to conjure magic from his fingers. You can loose yourself in every single one of his songs and this is no different.

The Antlers – Palace

www.youtube.com/watch?v=E9afJSKCOQQ

So delicate you think it could crumble in your ears at any moment. The brass adds a wonderfully different texture and the lyrics thick as ever with melancholy play their part and set the scene for what is to come.

Coldplay – Midnight

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BQeMxWjpr-Y&

A fairly brave step at the time and a really interesting standalone piece that gets the right balance of ingredients. From what other new songs i’ve heard sadly this is the only time they get the recipe spot on.

Sylvan Esso – Coffee

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qr5AIKRPIHo&

Has a slight feel of a one hit wonder, but is perky, fun and sticks in your head.

iLoveMakonnen + Drake – Tuesday

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Jma1kOQyGw&

Guilty pleasure and very much a leave your brain at the door (of the club) song. He’s not very good, but has an odd magnetism to him. Great story about how this all came together.

Metronomy – I’m Aquarius

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iQS4oa-dgLY

Very poignant and considered. The layers are beautifully crafted and it all really stands out in a rather disappointing album.

Flying Lotus + Kendrick Lamar – Never Catch Me

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2lXD0vv-ds8

FlyLo never stops and yet the quality of his output ever declines. The intricate bass play and ferocious sampling and beats are top notch once again. Plenty of mixed responses to Kendrick’s return this year, but this appearance holds out hope of a return to his peak.

Twilight Sad – There’s A Girl In The Corner

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l8H38U4nZag&

The thing that sets them apart from other standard bands is the power and delivery of the lyrics. They rattle inside your brain and form around your current situations.

SOHN – The Wheel

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AslPYSm7jfg

Yet to delve into the new album by How To Dress Well, but this will more than suffice until then. Evokes heavy feelings of wandering down dark city streets.

Hookworms – On Leaving

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GFP3wlEcAUc&

Modern psych that hits you full in the face with sheer sonic power. It takes you on a ride that goes up, down and through waves of drone and distortion.

Given that they are about to kick of their UK tour to support new album Motto, the one subject to rave reviews, 8/10 ratings and general buzz, Katie…

Given that they are about to kick of their UK tour to support new album Motto, the one subject to rave reviews, 8/10 ratings and general buzz, Katie Harkin, founder, writer, singer and guitarist of Sky Larkin would be forgiven for feeling nervous or frantic, buzzing about the attention she is receiving and anxious as to how to perform to the level of the bar that has been set. As it is we are sat downstairs in The Lexington, munching chips, chatting away. Only after twenty minutes or so, when soundcheck is upon them, do we realise that there has been no question and answer situation, but a genuinely nice conversation. The gregarious and lovely Katie is chatty, happy, and quietly welcoming, saying thank you at any mere hint of praise, suggesting that not only are they one of the most exciting bands on the scene, but one of the nicest.
Today they have been playing an acoustic session for This is Fake DIY, something she describes as ‘odd for band like us, but nice.’ Loud and proud, their sound is not one that would immediately translate to acoustic, but she ‘enjoyed it. There is so much muscle memory to music, and you get used to physically playing live, so it is nice to strip it back to the song. I don’t want to be bound up in the athleticism of it all, and that isn’t why I play the way I play. Just because we can play really fast and loud now, but that doesn’t always mean that we should!’
[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EycdIduOb70&w=560&h=315]
The way she plays is vibrant and vital, and the new songs have a rush of urgency that is immediate as well as intimate. It has always been this way, for both debut album The Golden Spike in 2009 and 2011 sophomore Kaleide, but the writing process for Motto accelerated the level of intensity and sound. Written whilst Katie was touring for twenty months with fellow Yorkshire band Wild Beasts, there was a need for immediacy and as she testifies, ‘there is nothing like a final boarding call or a limited few days back at home’ to force you to write.’
Whilst writing was done on the road, recording happened back in the band’s hometown of Leeds. The Leeds music scene is one that she rightly has a lot of pride in, the home leg of this tour at the legendary Brudenell Social Club being ‘the only place to be’ although confesses that she finds the hostessing element sometimes stressful. Just a day before they donated t shirts from their first album The Golden Spike to local record shops Jumbo and Crash. ‘We’re so lucky to have two independent music shops. There are cities that have massive universities that don’t have record shops. Can you believe that? Only HMVs.’
Sky Larkin’s place in the hierarchy of music is an odd one. They have been around for nearly five years, and are signed to mighty label Wichita, home of The Cribs, Los Campesinos, and Frankie & The Heartstrings, yet are still moderately small. Part of the reason for this is that although the band is ‘old’ they are ‘young.’ Right from the get go with debut single Fossil I they picked up attention from such a young age, being suddenly cast into the indie public eye right from the start, when Nestor was still at school and Kate had just started university. People shouldn’t put too much weight upon their age though. As Kate says, ‘we were just that age. We were lucky in many ways that we got attention so close to the start, it was right from the beginning. In the age of the internet everyone grows up in public, so people have always been aware of us.’

What it does mean though is that there is a clear evolving progression to their sound, and general consensus is that on Motto they have stepped up a gear with The Fly, NME and The Guardian all raving about them. Again, Kate believes this to be something that is pretty obvious. ‘Between the ages of like 17 and 24 you change a lot, and so our sound has also altered. We’ve become more mature so I guess that the sound has to. It’s not a conscious decision, but a natural evolution. Of course we have changed, so of course our sound has.’
As a label Wichita is a good place for them to be, and a great umbrella for the band, the support that comes from a mass indie label never dulling the vibrancy of the independent band. The label are sat at a table next to us drinking pints and eating burgers, all hanging out together. ‘There’s a huge deal of push and pull, we are always trying to create opportunities for each other, and we come to them with ideas and vice versa. There are no restrictions..’ In fact later on, when on stage, Katie thanks the label for responding to her text to ‘bring whisky to the stage please.’
Everywhere people have been commenting on the band’s time off, but whilst Nestor was finishing his degree and playing in Menace Beach, members changing (it was bassist Michael Matthews first gig tonight, and Nile Marr and Sam Pryor perform on the album) Katie had ‘never physically worked so hard in my life.’ Touring, learning new songs, writing the album, as well as ‘trying to be a good person to everyone at home’ takes its toll. This is the first hint that things have not been so rosy on a personal level. Losses and loves have clearly influenced the songs and the lyrics, and it wasn’t something that Katie spoke to people about until the release of Loom, her ‘fake out.’ Is the album an exorcism in some way then? ‘I can’t detach myself from what happened, and when I write I guess it all comes out, but the way they are written though means that people can read the lyrics and understand or they can take it as a pop song, the way it is.’
With a level of complexity and depth the new album reflects a game change and step up for the band, be that conscious or not. At tonight’s gig I am with three people who have never heard the band before. Each goes home and buys the album that evening. Like me they are enamored by Katie’s reticent beauty and banter, but also those immediate and captivating great pop songs, slow building gritty lyrics, and the band’s masterful stage vibrations. Sky Larkin, and Katie Harkin, have no reason to feel nervous or frantic – they have talent and tunes.

Peter Darling is a singer songwriter from Kent. So Peter Darling is some bloke strumming his acoustic guitar and singing yearning odes to countryside times gone by, probably with too much facial hair like the rest of them? Ha.

They say that every song has already been written, but that doesn’t stop so many artists just replaying them. On Limehouse the musical canon has been well and truly absorbed, the best of it all being seemingly seamlessly merged into striking song writing, to plug back in again to the ever evolving musical cloud.
Having a seemingly symbiotic relationship with his craft, from the opener Sunland (Intro) that quivers and quakes its way across the strings to final song Never Outstay Your Welcome, a fun and frantic acceptance of the frustrations of teenage life, this is the sound of someone coming of age, and realising that amongst the dichotomies of black and white exist shades of grey and that can be damn good fun. Honest Again is engrossing and energetic whilst Venus sounds like George Michael’s best ballad – in a wonderful way. Changer chugs along with real grit, the strong vocals adding a layer of almost menace to the melody. A rampant and random amalgamation of hooks, fuzzy electronics and striking styles abound, and startle with the conviction and ability with which each is grabbed.
The entire EP (bar a cover of Air’s Venus) was written and produced by Peter himself, and is available to download for free from his bandcamp page. Talented and generous.

It’s All Happening began as a fanzine in Leeds back in 2008, so it’s good to be able to return to our roots and tell you how excited we are about Yorkshire’s Beacons Festival. Set in the rolling hills of the Yorkshire Dales from Friday 17th August, the three day festival returns for its seventh year with another fantastic line up.
Wild Beasts, long time IAH favourites, will hooting and howling through their headline slot on Saturday night, whilst Roots Manuva and Toots and the Maytals headline the Friday and Sunday, respectively. There are also a host of hot new acts such as Hey Sholay, moody sisters 2:54, Savages and Outfit, in addition to more established bands such as Veronica Falls, back from breaking the US, Cloud Nothings the fun and frenetic Clock Opera.
Despite issues with flash floods in 2011, Beacons is now located to much higher ground on the same Estate, so there should be no repeat of the freak events of last year. Although a British festival wouldn’t be complete without a little rain now, would it?
Aside from the music, there are a host of other attractions to entertain attendees including guerilla theatrics, a kids area and a fancy dress theme of ‘All the fun of the fair’. What more could you want?
Tickets are available for just £84.50 from the Beacons Festival website.
