Chorley based sextet Then Thickens sound like they are overwhelmed with emotion, and the only outlet for it is writing rushing melodies underpinned by rampant chords. Their debut album Death Cap At Anglezarke has a lo-fi grungey sensibility, the lens through which clever and accessible pop songs are filtered. The hazy spirit of late summers and changing twilight is embraced on tracks such as Restart Your Heart and Death Cap, but there is also a tremble of change and blustering twists.. Although angsty in places – Ritalin Love – and sweet in others, a la Any Other Thing, the 11 tracks on here are all executed with certainty and passion and drenched in buzzing throbs of slinging guitar in the process. They’ve just announced the good news that they will be receiving support from the PRS foundation, so let’s hope that we hear more from Then Thickens in 2015.
