Sky Between Leaves – Sky Between Leaves

skybetweenleaves_010You know how sometimes the path to a new band is an odd one, nothing to do with hearing their music and all together with an unhealthy obsession with a spectacle wearing, nimble of body, linguistically dexterous, ludicrously talented, socially perceptive and seductively softly spoken songwriter and musician who has beguiled me since his Britpop days ’til now? No? Well Sky Between Leaves  make music brilliant enough that they will probably manage to capture you in the more conventional manner.
The band’s name was taken from Jarvis Cocker’s narrative of being given glasses as a child and realizing that the holes in the trees were in fact the ‘sky between the leaves.’ Bristling with poignancy, and brimming with urgency, this eponymous Sky Between Leaves flickers in waves, looping and looping, its underlying repression threatening to burst forth at any moment.
It won’t take more than approximately four seconds to realise that the totally trippy swooning psychedelia of the track is influenced somewhat by the Happy Mondays, Stone Roses and Primal Scream, and eight to realise that in itself is an excellent thing.
