Two Wounded Birds & Trwbador @ The Social 11 January 2011

Huw Stevens Introducing @ The Social

Francesca Baker

Taking niche to a needlepoint thin ness, Trwbador, with their baffling name, Welsh lyrics, and gentle voice, are never going to take the mainstream by storm. Female musicians tend to fall into one of two camps, largely dependent upon which side you swing: you want to be them or bed them. With Angharad Van Rijswijk you just want her to be your little sister; her soft voice and twinkling glockenspiel angelic, and her coy shrugs of the shoulder belie a hint of embarrassment as to why the crowd are looking on at her. As the guy in front of me said ‘voice of an angel’ – but angels never got very far in rock did they?

Trwbador

Sounding like they’ve stepped straight out of Tarantino movie, Two Wounded Birds entertained with their intense yet cheery coastal pop. With the collars folded up and a shady gaze in the eye, the songs are suggestive and the execution loaded with a kind of merry menace. More melancholy and bluesy than much of the 60s surf rock scene, they sound a cross of Best Coast meets Frankie & The Heartstrings, with a huge dollop of authenticity rather than trend following. Looking forward to big things from this band.
